August 15, 2022/report

August 15, 2022

Yesterday saw the beginning of what will be at least a week’s worth of triple digit heat. Upper level high pressure over the Texas panhandle is building westward over California and has already effectively cut off the marine layer. The current sounding at Monterey is showing the marine layer is only 1,500 feet deep. The altimeter reading at both San Francisco and Las Vegas is identical so there’s no difference in pressure to tug that sea breeze inland. Along with the westward movement of the high will come the westward movement of the monsoon, as well. Beginning Tuesday, a limited amount of that moisture will begin working its way up the Sierra Nevada for isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada and occasional mid and  high level clouds over the valley floor. The hottest days in the series will be Wednesday through Friday when most locations will top out in the 104 to 108 degree range. The high will not loosen its grip until roughly Sunday or Monday of next week when a weak trough of low pressure moves into the Pacific Northwest and perhaps northern California. This might just stimulate the marine layer enough to allow it to surge inland, allowing temperatures to come down.

Forecast: Mostly clear and hot today. Mostly clear to possibly partly cloudy tonight through Saturday. Mostly clear and a little cooler Sunday and Monday.

Two Week Outlook:  August 22 through August 28   This model shows a continuation of an active monsoon season over the Desert Southwest and occasionally California with daily chances of thunderstorms over the mountains and partly cloudy skies over the valley. Above average temperatures will continue.

August:  This model is quite generic, indicating the same trend of high pressure resulting in generally above average temperatures for the month of August. Precipitation will be near average, which means very little to none. This model continues to show an active monsoon over the west which may visit California from time to time.

August, September, October: Upper level high pressure will be more dominant over the next few months, resulting in somewhat above average temperatures. This year’s monsoon, which has been an active one so far, will result in a continuation of above average precipitation over the Desert Southwest and possibly the Sierra Nevada.

Wind Discussion:  Winds will be mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 mph through Thursday. Winds during the night and morning hours will be light to near calm.

Rain: Expect dry weather indefinitely.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
