Debris clouds from thunderstorm activity over southern California yesterday drifted northwestward over central California last night and this morning. these clouds essentially stopped the radiational cooling process, resulting in what I consider to be a hot morning. As of 5:00am, Porterville was reporting 80 degrees, Fresno 84, and Bakersfield 86. Yesterday afternoon, Fresno, Lemoore, and Hanford all hit 107 degrees, top in the valley. Strong upper level high pressure continues to be centered over Utah this morning. The clockwise flow around the high continues to transport moisture from the monsoon in from the southeast. This will continue to create ideal conditions for thunderstorms over the mountains and deserts of southern California and the Sierra Nevada. Temperatures today will be similar to yesterday’s with highs generally between 104 and 108. Slight cooling will occur Thursday and Friday as the high weakens slightly. The northern flank of the high will break down over the weekend, allowing wea disturbances to move into the Pacific Northwest, further weakening the high early next week. models show another high building a week from today. This one will build in from the eastern Pacific, eventually covering the western 1/3 of the US, favoring low triple digits early next week with the possibility of another round of monsoon moisture moving northward.
Forecast: Partly cloudy and hot today. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy tonight through Friday and continued hot. Mostly clear and hot Saturday through Sunday. Mostly clear with a slow cooling trend Monday through Wednesday.

Two Week Outlook: August 24 through August 30 This model shows a continuation of an active monsoon season over the Desert Southwest and occasionally California with daily chances of thunderstorms over the mountains and partly cloudy skies over the valley. Above average temperatures will continue.
August: This model is quite generic, indicating the same trend of high pressure resulting in generally above average temperatures for the month of August. Precipitation will be near average, which means very little to none. This model continues to show an active monsoon over the west which may visit California from time to time.
August, September, October: Upper level high pressure will be more dominant over the next few months, resulting in somewhat above average temperatures. This year’s monsoon, which has been an active one so far, will result in a continuation of above average precipitation over the Desert Southwest and possibly the Sierra Nevada.
Wind Discussion: Winds will be mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 mph through Saturday. Winds during the night and morning hours will be light to near calm.
Rain: Expect dry weather indefinitely.
Frost: All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
