Today will be see the next salvo in a prolonged heat wave. The only chance I see for readings dipping below 100 will be next Tuesday and Wednesday when a weak low moves through the Pacific Northwest, weakening the high slightly. In the short term, strong upper level high pressure continues to stretch from the Great Basin to off shore california. The steering currents aloft are very weak, so the bulk of the monsoon will remain just to our east for now. By Thursday of next week, upper level high pressure over the eastern Pacific will bulge inland, merging with the high over the Desert Southwest, once again pushing temperatures well above the century mark. In monitoring the marine layer, the latest sounding at Monterey shows a depth of around 1,500 feet. Winds at Pacheco Pass are out of the west at 17 mph so places like Merced and Los Banos may warm to around the century mark but pressure differences between the coast and the interior are flat, so there’s no way it will move down the valley.

Two Week Outlook: August 26 through September 1: This model shows the monsoon moving slightly to our east, reducing the chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada. The trend of above average temperatures this August will continue.
August: This model is quite generic, indicating the same trend of high pressure resulting in generally above average temperatures for the month of August. Precipitation will be near average, which means very little to none. This model continues to show an active monsoon over the west which may visit California from time to time.
August, September, October: Upper level high pressure will be more dominant over the next few months, resulting in somewhat above average temperatures. This year’s monsoon, which has been an active one so far, will result in a continuation of above average precipitation over the Desert Southwest and possibly the Sierra Nevada.
Wind Discussion: Winds will be mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 mph through Monday. Winds during the night and morning hours will be light to near calm.
Rain: Expect dry weather indefinitely.
Frost: All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
