California is essentially clear this morning with the exception of the usual fog and low clouds along the coast. The depth of the marine layer at Monterey is around 1,500 feet deep. Today will be the hottest in the series as upper level high pressure resides over northern California. This high is slowly shifting eastward and will eventually find its home over the Four Corners region, which is typical for late summer. Readings today will range from about 102 to 106 at most locations then will slowly begin to drop Thursday and Friday, but more especially over the weekend when a low moves through the Pacific Northwest, increasing the onshore flow and allowing modified marine air to move down the valley. Temperatures by Sunday will lower into double digits and, with some luck, will be in the mid 90s by Monday and Tuesday. Medium range models beyond Wednesday of next week show the high building back in from the southeast for our next warming trend.
Forecast: Mostly clear through Sunday and continued hot. Mostly clear and not as hot Sunday night through Wednesday.

Two Week Outlook: August 26 through September 4: This model shows the monsoon moving slightly to our east, reducing the chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada. The trend of above average temperatures this August will continue.
August: This model is quite generic, indicating the same trend of high pressure resulting in generally above average temperatures for the month of August. Precipitation will be near average, which means very little to none. This model continues to show an active monsoon over the west which may visit California from time to time.
August, September, October: Upper level high pressure will be more dominant over the next few months, resulting in somewhat above average temperatures. This year’s monsoon, which has been an active one so far, will result in a continuation of above average precipitation over the Desert Southwest and possibly the Sierra Nevada.
Wind Discussion: Winds will be mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 mph through Saturday. Winds during the night and morning hours will be light to near calm.
Rain: Expect dry weather indefinitely.
Frost: All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
