August 29, 2022/report

August 29, 2022

Over the weekend, we were blessed with sub 100 degree weather for a change. This will hold through today. A shallow layer of modified marine air will keep readings in the mid to upper 90s this afternoon. That will go out the window Tuesday, however, as a massive high builds over the west with its initial center over Utah. This center connects to another high center off shore. By Thursday, the high will take up its usual summertime locale in the Four Corners region. By this time,, everything from the Ohio Valley to off shore California will be under its umbrella of hot subsiding air. This will drive temperatures again to excessive levels. Some high resolution models are depicting hottest location on the valley floor by this weekend to approach the 110 degree mark. Some modification will take place next week. the persistent summer pattern we’ve had this year of the Four Corners high being located further west than usual will continue. The clockwise circulation around the high will eventually turn the winds around to the southeast, increasing the chance of thunderstorms over the southern Sierra Nevada by this weekend.

Two Week Outlook:  September 5 through September 11:  This model continues to show hot weather for California. It also indicates the monsoon will be active, occasionally moving into California for chances of mountain storms and valley clouds.

August:  This model is quite generic, indicating the same trend of high pressure resulting in generally above average temperatures for the month of August. Precipitation will be near average, which means very little to none. This model continues to show an active monsoon over the west which may visit California from time to time.

August, September, October: Upper level high pressure will be more dominant over the next few months, resulting in somewhat above average temperatures. This year’s monsoon, which has been an active one so far, will result in a continuation of above average precipitation over the Desert Southwest and possibly the Sierra Nevada.

Wind Discussion:  Winds will be mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 mph through Thursdady. Winds during the night and morning hours will be light to near calm.

Rain: Expect dry weather indefinitely.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
