September 10, 2022/rain update

September 10, 2022

Once hurricane Kay is now no more than a remnant low located about 250 miles to the west/southwest of San Diego. The difference in pressure between high pressure over the Great Basin and the remnant low has spawned some gusty winds over the Kern County mountains. These winds have been forced downslope and into the Kern County portion of the valley floor. Southeast winds of 25 mph are occurring at Meadows Field and  35 mph at the bottom of the Grapevine. I noted Grapevine Peak south of Bakersfield recorded winds out of the east gusting to 46 mph. there is a bit of a split in shower activity at this hour. One band of energy this morning moved through Fresno and Merced Counties. The next surge of moisture is moving northward through southern California. That activity is just now reaching the Kern County mountains. It may begin to affect the south valley tonight through Sunday. Showers are also developing over the southern Sierra Nevada with thunderstorms over Mariposa County. This activity is moving from east to west so we’ll all find out together how much of that activity makes it out over the valley floor. Models show the remnants of Kay moving slowly through southern and central California through Monday. a trough of low pressure moving through the Pacific Northwest and northern California will allow the westerlies to finally break through, pushing all the tropical moisture east for a return to dry weather Monday night and well beyond.

Forecast: Mostly cloudy with periods of showers tonight from Kings and Tulare County southward with a chance of showers further north. Isolated thunderstorms are possible through the period. The risk of showers will continue through Monday. partly cloudy Monday night. Mostly clear Tuesday through Saturday.

Temperatures: Lows tonight will be mostly in the low to mid 70s. Highs Sunday will warm into the low to possibly mid 90s. lows Sunday night will cool into the mid 60s to the lower 70s with highs in the low to mid 90s Monday.

Next report: Sunday, September 10
