October 17, 2022 report

October 17, 2022

Yesterday, highs were in the upper 70s to near 80, meaning we actually returned to near average for a change. Today will show a marginal increase in temperatures due to the heavy influx of marine air slowly mixing out. A low pressure trough is approaching the coast. However, forecast charts do not really show it moving inland. Instead, it’s projected to morph into a closed low too far off shore to result in milder temperatures. In fact, hottest locations will be pushing 90 as early as Thursday afternoon. In the meantime, a weak ridge of high pressure will be over California and much of the west through the weekend. It appears our next major change will occur later next week as a cold trough of low pressure zips southward from the Gulf of Alaska, through the Pacific Northwest and then through the northern Rocky Mountain region and the Pacific Northwest. It will, however, lead to a significant cooling trend. With some luck, readings will dive well down into the 70s by Monday.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Thursday. Mostly clear Thursday night through Monday.

Two Week Outlook:  October 24 through October 30:  This model shows a broad trough of low pressure over the west for a chance of showers during this period. Temperatures will finally end up below average.

October:  This model is really a flip of the coin as far as precipitation is concerned and shows no real bias for above or below average rainfall. It does indicate somewhat above average temperatures will continue.

October, November, December: This model definitely has a bias for above average temperatures for the next 90 days. It also points to above average rainfall for northern California with below average precipitation for southern California. With that in mind, that gives California near average precipitation.

Wind Discussion:  Winds will be generally variable to no more than 10 mph during the late mornings and afternoons through Thursday. Winds during the overnight hours will be generally no more than 5 mph with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain: Expect dry weather for a at least the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
