Forecast

November 14, 2022 afternoon report

November 14, 2022

The fog that developed this morning, mainly towards the western and central portions of the valley, has dissipated. We will have to play the cat and mouse game with the fog again the next few nights. Otherwise, skies in the valley at midday are generally clear. There is a weak upper low off the northern California coast. The only evidence of its existence is some mid and high level clouds wrapping around its center but with no precipitation. The low will be just west of San Francisco by the morning commute tomorrow then off the southern California coast Tuesday night and Wednesday. It will finally open up into a wave of low pressure over northern Mexico. As the system coasts down the coast, the flow aloft will briefly become northeast for gusty winds over the high Sierra and the Kern County mountains. However, the valley will be undisturbed by this flow. This daily routine of daily afternoon sunshine with areas of fog will continue for the remainder of the week along with patchy frost during the early morning hours. For the past several days the pattern has been for the eastern Pacific high to be just off shore with a northerly and, some days even, a northeast flow. This will finally begin to change early next week. the high will flatten out, allowing a north/northwest flow to develop down California. Even though there will be a fundamental pattern change, it won’t bring rain and may not even break the inversion as it typically takes a stronger system to do the job. So, if you like today’s weather, you’ll like the weather into early next week.

Forecast: Areas of night and morning fog and low clouds. Otherwise, it will be mostly clear and hazy through Friday. Areas of night and morning fog and low clouds continuing, mainly up the center of the valley, with hazy afternoon sunshine Friday through Monday.

Wind Discussion:  Winds during the night and morning hours will be generally at or less than 5 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Thursday. Winds during the late morning and afternoon hours will be generally less than 8 mph with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  Dew points are just slightly lower than they were 24 hours ago and are generally running in the upper 30s to near 40 this afternoon. However, temperatures are between 1 to 3 degrees warmer than yesterday at this time. What does it all mean? Very little change, is what it means. Essentially, the same air mass is trapped on the valley floor due to an inversion. The same inversion, though, makes the valley such a great citrus growing area. Widespread low to mid 30s will be evident tonight and each night for the remainder of the week. the very coldest regions could dip into the upper 20s. even though there will be a fundamental pattern change early next week, it probably won’t mean much until we get a system strong enough to break the inversion over the valley floor.
