November 19, 2022 afternoon report

November 19, 2022

Santa Ana winds are again cranked up, especially through the canyons of southern California. Winds at Sandburg near the top of the Ridge Route are at just under 50 mph. The winds have also leached down to the valley floor, at least in one spot. Winds at the CHP office are out of the south at 20mph, gusting to 35. Whether these winds work their way further down the valley is anybody’s guess. Where they do occur, gusts to near 50 mph are possible.

Overall, there is strong high pressure both at the surface and aloft over the Great Basin and Northern Rockies with much lower pressure over southern California. The pressure gradient, as we call it, will weaken Sunday as will winds. A fundamental change will occur early next week as a new configuration sets up. Unfortunately, it’s not one that will bring rain. A new high will build in from the southwest, ensuring the storm track goes through Washington and northern Oregon. Models are also showing a warming trend as we head into the Thanksgiving weekend with mid to upper 60s Thanksgiving Day and low 70s possible Friday and Saturday, just in time for the big shopping days.

Some models are hinting about possible wet weather towards the end of the month, however, considering recent trends, we’ll take this with a grain of salt for now.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Tuesday with patchy late night and morning fog. Mostly clear Tuesday night through Saturday with patchy late night and early morning fog.

Wind Discussion:  Santa Ana winds are again cranked up, especially through the canyons of southern California. North of Kern County, winds during the later evening and overnight hours will generally less than 7 mph with extended periods of near calm conditions. Midmorning through afternoon hours, winds will be generally less than 10 mph with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for at least the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  Dew points are hanging up there with the exception of Kern County. At Bakersfield, the dew point has fallen to 33, however Porterville and Hanford each report 39 with Fresno and Visalia at 40. These dew points, along with mild afternoons, are maintaining the status quo. Expect another night of low to mid 30s with a chance of upper 20s in those cold locations. Expect similar conditions both Monday and Tuesday. A westerly flow will begin tomorrow; however it is very weak and what effect it will have on dew points later this week remains to be seen. For now, I believe low to mid 30s are a good bet through Wednesday, and possibly longer.
