Forecast

December 14, 2022 afternoon report

December 14, 2022

The rex block pattern of upper level high pressure over the eastern Pacific ridging into the Gulf of Alaska with a strong low over the center of the country, keeping weather dry through at least the weekend. The high will give way somewhat Monday of next week as a zonal flow sets up across the Pacific and into California. Models depict the area of lowest pressure will be over British Columbia while a ridge of high pressure remains along the west coast. If this pattern comes about, continued dry weather can   be expected all of next week as well. A persistent area of high pressure will remain over the west through Christmas Day, so our main weather challenge will be night and morning fog and low clouds and overnight low temperatures.

Forecast: Other than high clouds at times, it will be mostly clear with areas of night and morning fog and low clouds through Friday. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Friday night through Wednesday with areas of night and morning fog and low clouds.

Wind Discussion:  Winds during the late morning and afternoons will be variable to 6 mph with periods of near calm conditions. Winds during the night and early morning hours will be light with periods of calm conditions through Saturday.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost: The only question in my mind for tonight is a large area of clouds off the California coast. Satellite imagery shows the leading edge already streaming overhead. Roughly 400 miles off shore, the cloud cover is considerably more dense. However, models indicate these clouds will remain off shore, so I believe the cloud cover will not be a factor in tonight’s outcome, meaning strong radiational cooling will still be the order of the evening. Even if these clouds move on shore, the only thing that would occur is we’d have a milder night that forecast. Models indicate the rex block pattern will continue through the weekend, resulting in dry weather. The pattern for next week will change as the flow will become west to east with the storm track remaining well north. The bottom line is we have a relatively dry air mass on the valley floor which has a good ability to allow the earth to radiate its heat skyward. This let’s temperatures drop to near freezing with coldest locations down to 27 to 28 or so. flat terrain operations will fall into the upper twenties to the low 30s. The same rule of thumb can be expected through the weekend. the inversion tonight should be decent with temperatures at 34 feet generally 5 to 8 degrees warmer.
