Temperatures vary widely at midday. It was all dependent on where the fog had cleared and where it had not. Readings were near 50 degrees in fog free locations but were chilly where fog persisted. For example, Visalia was reporting 41 degrees and ¾ mile visibility, Hanford was reporting just ½ mile visibility with a temperature of 41 while Lemoore was reporting 1/8 of a mile and 40 degrees. This will pretty much be the rules of engagement in the coming days. Fog shrouded areas will be quite chilly, even during the warmest part of the day while locations in the hazy sunshine will see temperatures near average. In the broad picture, upper level high pressure covered most of the eastern Pacifici and the western ¼ of t he US
While a very weak low is stationed roughly 500 miles off the central coast. As long as most of the fog clears in the afternoon, it will lead to strong radiational cooling, allowing temperatures to fall to near freezing or marginally below. The only real change in the next week or so will take place mainly in the Midwest and east. A major arctic outbreak will begin about Monday of next week and will continue through the Christmas weekend while a persistent ridge will be over and along the central coast for tranquil weather.
