The fog is so far fairly patchy this morning as the atmosphere remains somewhat churned up after that last weather system moved through. The next system of note is weak and will move through the Pacific Northwest and into the Great Basin as an inside slider. Light snow showers will spread down the Sierra Nevada with a chance of light showers over the valley floor, mainly later tonight and Thursday morning. Rainfall amounts from this system will range from nothing to generally no more than .10. Upper level high pressure is currently building over the eastern Pacific and will build a ridge into western Canada, generating a north/northwest flow over California. This will pump in relatively cold air, resulting in a combination of fog and frost each morning. A few isolated pockets are right at the 31 to 32 degree mark this morning with most locations in the mid 30s. this will be the theme through the weekend. A blocking ridge of upper level high pressure will maintain itself well over the eastern Pacific with Pacific storms blockaded far to the north. Colder than average temperatures will prevail through the end of the week and well into net week with areas of frost each day.
Forecast: Outside of areas of fog and low clouds, skies will be mostly clear this morning. Increasing cloudiness this afternoon. A chance of showers tonight and for a time Thursday morning. Partly cloudy Thursday afternoon and Thursday night. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Saturday through Wednesday with areas of fog and low clouds.

Two Week Outlook: January 22 through January 28: For the first time in about three weeks, this model is portraying a dry weather pattern. a cut off low will be over southern California with a pool of relatively cold air so look for below average temperatures.
January: This model continues the trend of the season with a favorable pattern for rain for California. The best chance of rain in January will be over the northern half of the state. Temperatures will run marginally below average.
January, February, March: This model nudges the storm track further north with near average rainfall for northern California but somewhat below average for central and southern California. Temperatures will run marginally above average.
Wind Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 5 mph today with periods of near calm conditions. Winds tonight will be out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph with stronger gusts possible, decreasing late. Winds Friday will be generally at or less than 5 mph with periods of near calm conditions, continuing through Saturday.
Rain Discussion: The only chance of rain for the next week to possibly ten days will occur tonight or Thursday morning and even then many locations may not record measurable rain at all. Those that do, will certainly record no more than .10.
Frost Discussion: Increasing clouds from a weak weather system moving through the valley tonight and Thursday morning will maintain above freezing conditions. Beginning Friday and continuing each night through the weekend, expect widespread lower 30s with the coldest locations dropping down to 27 to 28 for fairly short durations. This is a typical January frost with a mixture of frost and fog. Relatively strong upper level high pressure will begin to build overhead during the next few days, increasing the likelihood of areas of fog and low clouds. Whether it takes over completely is a game a roulette. Surely, though, it will be a factor. Fog or no fog, this air mass has the potential of the very coldest river bottom type locations dropping down to 26 to 27 or so beginning Friday morning with most flat terrain areas in the 29 to 34 degree range and hillsides above freezing. By Friday morning, the inversion will be moderate with temperatures at 34 feet generally 3 to 6 degrees warmer at most locations.
