January 22, 2023 report

January 22, 2023

There is quite a bit of fog over parts of the valley this morning, mainly in Fresno and Tulare Counties. It will be pretty slow to clear off but most, if not all, locations will see hazy sunshine by this afternoon. Upper level high pressure stretches from the eastern Pacific off the California coast while a low pressure system digs southward through the Great Basin. This is giving a reinforcing shot of relatively cold air into California, ensuring marginally below average temperatures through Monday. the off shore high will begin to bulge eastward into the western ¼ of the US beginning Tuesday. The high will build northward, covering the entire eastern Pacific Ocean by midweek and shielding California from any potentially active weather through all of next week. models continue to show a potentially active weather pattern beginning around the first of February or so, resulting in a chance of precipitation. between now and then, the main challenge will be fog and low clouds and the coverage during the night and morning hours.

Forecast: Areas of night and morning fog and low clouds. Otherwise, expect hazy sunshine today through Wednesday. Night and morning fog and low clouds will continue Wednesday through Sunday with hazy afternoon sun in most areas.

Two Week Outlook:  January 28 through February 3: This model for the second day in a row is shifting towards a pattern that would bring precipitation back to central California. Potential storminess would be from the Gulf of Alaska so it appears we will start off February with below average temperatures.

January:  This model continues the trend of the season with a favorable pattern for rain for California. The best chance of rain in January will be over the northern half of the state. Temperatures will run marginally below average.

January, February, March:  This model nudges the storm track further north with near average rainfall for northern California but somewhat below average for central and southern California. Temperatures will run marginally above average.

Wind Discussion:  Winds will be generally at or less than 7 mph late mornings and afternoons and variable in nature. winds during the night and morning hours will be light with extended periods of near calm conditions through Wednesday.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to possibly 10 days.

Frost Discussion: Temperatures at most locations this morning were in the low to mid 30s with coldest locations down to 28 to 29 or so. Anticipate the same outcome tonight and over the next few nights as we have a relatively cold air mass parked on the valley floor underneath a warm air inversion. That same warm air  inversion is allowing a great deal of fog to form this morning and will continue to do so. Coldest locations will drop down to 27 to 28 degrees. However, most locations will range between 29 and 33 degrees. Hillsides will be above freezing. The inversion tonight will be strong with temperatures at 34 feet ranging from 4 to 8 degrees warmer at most locations. A large upper high is parked right off the California coast and will expand inland over the next 72 hours, firming up the inversion even more. This will set the state for more valley fog. Whether or not the fog takes over is a big question, one which only Mother Nature can predict.
