January 25, 2023 report

January 25, 2023

Most of the fog as of 6:00am was basically parallel to Highway 99 from north of Delano to west of Fresno with patchy fog elsewhere. A relatively strong upper high is anchored along the Pacific coast with California sitting on the eastern periphery of the high. This is allowing for a minor warming trend during the afternoon hours. However, strong radiational cooling will still result in marginally below freezing conditions during the later night and morning hours. Very little change can be expected through Saturday with a warm air inversion still clamped on the valley floor. areas of fog and low clouds will continue during the night and morning hours with hazy afternoon sunshine each day. By late Saturday, the high will shift a bit to the west, further out to sea. This will allow a moisture starved low pressure system in western Canada to drop southward to a position just off the central coast of California by midday Monday. it will drop into Arizona by Tuesday. The last couple of model runs  have projected light showers over the Sierra Nevada. Snow levels will be low as the air mass associated with this feature originates in western Canada. Cooler weather will arrive early next week, along with just a chance of sprinkles or light showers over the valley floor.

Forecast: Other than areas of low clouds and fog during the night and morning hours, it will be mostly clear and hazy through Saturday night. Increasing cloudiness Sunday leading to a chance of sprinkles or isolated light showers Sunday night and Monday. partly cloudy Monday night. Partly cloudy Tuesday through Wednesday with patchy night and morning fog.

Two Week Outlook:  February 1 through February 7: This model for the second day in a row is shifting towards a pattern that would bring precipitation back to central California. Potential storminess would be from the Gulf of Alaska so it appears we will start off February with below average temperatures.

January:  This model continues the trend of the season with a favorable pattern for rain for California. The best chance of rain in January will be over the northern half of the state. Temperatures will run marginally below average.

..

January, February, March:  This model nudges the storm track further north with near average rainfall for northern California but somewhat below average for central and southern California. Temperatures will run marginally above average.

Wind Discussion:  Winds will be generally at or less than 7 mph late mornings and afternoons and variable in nature. winds during the night and morning hours will be light with extended periods of near calm conditions through Saturday.

Rain Discussion: The only chance we have of measurable rain over the next 10 days will move in Sunday night and Monday in response to a mo anisture starved system out of western Canada. Light snow showers are possible over the Sierra  Nevada. The chance of measurable precipitation on the valley floor is quite low and if rain does happen to show up, less than .10 will be measured.

Frost Discussion: As of 6:00am, Ivanhoe reported a low of 28 and Porterville 29. The remainder of the region ranged  between 29 and 34 at most locations. Tonight will be yet another carbon copy with coldest temps down to 28 to 29 and with most flat terrain locations chilling down to 29 to 34 of so and with hillsides remaining above freezing. I’m going to nudge high temperatures into the lower 60s over the next few days as that off shore high has shifted just a bit further east. Expect the status quo through the weekend. A moisture starved and cold, weak system will move through Sunday night and Monday. the air mass associated with this system is cold and will drop high temperatures into the lower 50s Monday through Wednesday of next week with another round of below freezing conditions Tuesday through Friday of next week. at this point, it looks like another round of upper 20s and lower 30s. Fortunately, it appears conditions will remain warm enough to keep the valley ag above critical conditions.
