Forecast

February 7, 2023 afternoon report

February 7, 2023

Temperatures at midday on the valley floor are running anywhere from 4 to 10 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago. The warming is even more pronounced over the mountains. Sandburg is 11 degrees warmer while Blue Canyon at an elevation of 5,300 is 14 degrees warmer than yesterday at this time. Obviously, a dome of upper level high pressure is building above California with a ridge extending northward into the Pacific Northwest. This high will dominate our high through Friday with a tranquil weather pattern and additional daytime warming. It will begin to break down Friday night as a trough of low pressure digs southward then morphs into a low center right over central California Saturday. Models don’t show much moisture with this system. Even so, there will be a chance of light showers over the mountain areas and even a slight chance over the valley floor before the low drops southward into southern California Sunday. Following this system, the flow aloft will become northeasterly with an off shore surface flow, resulting in a cooling trend beginning Monday. also of note, models are showing a cold low dropping southward more than likely as an inside slider Wednesday of next week. California will be flanked on the far west edge of this low so it’s possible there may be more mountain showers and a minimal chance of light showers over the valley floor roughly a week from Wednesday.

Forecast: Partly cloudy for a time tonight with areas of dense fog developing after midnight, mainly up the center of the valley. Mostly clear Wednesday through Friday with patchy fog during the later night and morning hours. Variable cloudiness Saturday through Sunday with a slight chance of showers Saturday and Saturday night. Mostly clear Sunday night through Tuesday with patchy late night fog and low clouds.

Woodlake 33/63/34/66 Hanford 33/62/35/66 Orosi 32/62/34/65

Wind Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 6 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Friday.

Rain: Dry weather will continue through Friday and probably Friday night. I need to add a slight chance of light showers to the forecast for Saturday and Saturday night. Models show a trough digging southward through the Pacific Northwest, morphing into a closed low right over central California Saturday. This will favor light rain and snow showers over the Sierra Nevada with a minimal chance over the valley floor, although amounts, if any, would likely be less than .10. dry weather will return Sunday through Tuesday. There is some question about precipitation about a week from Wednesday. As an inside slider drops into the Great Basin, there will be the chance of light showers over the mountains and a slight chance over the valley.

Frost:  A band of high clouds will be moving overhead during the first portion of the night, slowing the radiational cooling process. These clouds will shift eastward after midnight, allowing the radiational cooling process to begin. Even though there has been a great deal of warming today, coldest locations tonight wiwll dip into the low 30s with most locations coming in between 32 and 36. Further modification will take place Wednesday. By Thursday, afternoon highs will be pushing into the 60s at some locations. This will begin to tug temperatures at most locations into the mid to upper 30s Thursday. Over the weekend, readings will be above freezing due to a low pressure system resulting in cloud cover with a slight chance of showers. From Sunday through Tuesday of next week, we’ll likely be back down into the low to mid 30s as an off shore flow at the surface transports a cooler air mass back into the valley. For now, there continues to be no pattern that would be of concern.
