Forecast

February 25, 2023 afternoon report

February 25, 2023

The current historic storm continues to put down staggering rain and snow totals. To our south, the LA basin has measured between 5 and 10 inches of rain. How often do you see Bakersfield pick up 2 inches of rain in a single storm. The following are rainfall totals since Friday morning: Porterville 1.97, Belridge 4.86, Mettler 1.77, Kettleman Hills 2.45, Visalia 2.74, Lemoore 4.02, Huron 1.74, Stratford 2.69, Fresno 3.03, Bakersfield 2.05, and Coalinga 2.16. China peak has recorded 5 feet of new snow. T

he center of circulation of this monstrous storm is just off shore from Vandenburg. The low will finally move through southern California tonight and Sunday, opening up into a wave as it accelerates eastward. We will see a brief break in the action as the next cold trough of low pressure is already digging southward from the Gulf of Alaska. It will move into the Pacific Northwest tonight and northern California Sunday morning with mainly light showers reaching central California by Sunday evening. By Monday night, a cold trough of low pressure will stretch from British Columbia to southern California. Several waves of energy will move through the trough, resulting in periods of showers Monday through Wednesday. This system will not come close to the current system. Even so, another .25 to .50 can be expected.

Models are back to showing a drying trend beginning Thursday and lasting through next weekend with possibly some more active weather beginning about March 6 or so.

Forecast: Scattered showers likely through the late evening hours. Becoming mostly to partly cloudy after midnight. partly cloudy Sunday morning.  increasing cloudiness Sunday afternoon. A chance of showers Sunday night. Periods of showers Monday through Wednesday. Partly cloudy Wednesday night and Thursday. Mostly clear Thursday night through Saturday.

Woodlake 32/54/37/54 Hanford 33/54/39/55 Orosi 32/54/39/54

Wind Discussion: Winds tonight will be variable to 15 mph. Winds Sunday will be out of the southeast at 8 to 15 mph. winds Sunday night through Sunday will be mainly out of the southeast at 8 to 15 mph with stronger gusts.

Rain: As of the time of this writing, there was a batch of showers moving from south to north through Tulare County. Much of the remainder of the valley is rain free at this hour. There remains a chance of showers for the first half of the night. After that, expect a brief dry period Sunday. The next cold trough of low pressure is already digging southeastward and will move into the Pacific Northwest tonight, reaching central California Sunday evening. The chance for light showers will begin to increase Sunday night. Expect periods of showers Monday through Wednesday. High pressure will finally begin to build in from the west Wednesday night and Thursday with dry weather lasting through next weekend and possibly into the following week.

Frost:  Widespread low to mid 30s tonight. Upper 20s are possible where skies clear for several hours. Because of the proximity of the current storm, a great deal of mixing will still be taking place so I don’t believe temperatures will drop below the 28 degree mark. All locations will be above freezing Monday through Wednesday mornings. Sub freezing weather appears likely Thursday and Friday mornings as a cold air mass settles in behind the exiting low. This far out, it would appear it will be an upper 20s to lower 30s event, but this pattern is evolving and this could change.
