Two Week Outlook: March 31 through April 6: For the first time in quite a spell, this model is not calling for above average precipitation. instead, the wording is “near average” with below average temperatures continuing
March: Above average temperatures will be confined from mainly New Mexico east. Below average temperatures will cover much of the western US, including California. Precipitation projections indicate fairly seasonal rainfall, not favoring above or below average rainfall. Let’s see how this plays out.
March, April, May: The 90 day outlook does not give much to grab onto. Above average temperatures from the Desert Southwest then all the way up the east coast with below average temperatures over the Pacific Northwest and the northern Rockies. Precipitation projections do not favor above or below average rainfall. I guess they’re hedging their bets.
Wind Discussion: Through Monday, winds will be generally less than 12 mph and variable during the afternoons and evenings. During the night and early morning hours, winds will be light to near calm. By late Monday night, wins will be variable at 8 to 15 mph, increasing to 15 to 30 mph Tuesday and Tuesday night. Winds Wednesday will be out of the northwest at 15 to 25 mph.
Rain Discussion: Dry conditions will continue through Monday night. Rain will reach Merced County by Tuesday morning, spreading southward through the morning, continuing Tuesday and Tuesday night. Expect showers Tuesday and Tuesday night with the exception of possible thunderstorms and showers may spread into Thursday morning, another very weak wave may move through Friday for another shot at showers, otherwise dry conditions can be expected through the weekend.
Computer generated rainfall estimates have changed little the past few days. It still spears the eastern sector of the valley north of Kern County will measure from .50 to 1.00 from Tuesday through Wednesday night. The west side will pick up between ..25 and .50 as will the valley portion of Kern County.
Frost Discussion. The coldest reading I could find as of 5;00 AM was 30 degrees at McFarland. most locations were between 34 and 38 degrees. Similar conditions will be found Sunday and Monday mornings with the coldest wind sheltered locations hitting the freezing mark. Above freeing temperatures can be expected Tuesday and beyond, although we may dip back into the mid 30s Monday
