Considering we’re pushing April, temperatures continue to be more February like. Noon observations around the valley indicate temperatures in the low to mid 50s, we remain on the eastern flank of upper level high pressure off shore, maintaining a cool, northwest flow over California. surface winds remain somewhat elevated along the west side of the valley where winds are averaging 10 to 20 mph out of the northwest. Winds reman light and variable along the eastern and southern flanks of the valley. Temperatures will remain well below average through Sunday then will jump into the mid to upper 60s Monday due to a southerly flow ahead of a rapidly intensifying low pressure system just north of the California/Oregon border. Models this afternoon are slowing down the timing of the next storm. It now appears it will be Tuesday afternoon before rain starts with ran continuing at times through Wednesday with showers Wednesday night into early Thursday morning. Gusty southeast winds will also kick up Tuesday due to an increasing pressure gradient between falling pressure off the north coast and higher pressure over southern California. The low will finally move inland through southern California Thursday, bring an end to this round of precipitation. the next system will move in next weekend. It appears light showers will begin over northern California. The growing area should remain dry, but that is not a given this season.
Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Monday. partly cloudy Monday night. Increasing cloudiness Tuesday morning. Rain spreading southward Tuesday afternoon. Rain at times Tuesday night through Wednesday. Isolated thunderstorms are possible Wednesday afternoon. Showers Wednesday night. Lingering showers are possible Thursday morning. Partly cloudy Thursday afternoon through Saturday.

Wind Discussion: Generally west of Highway 99, winds will continue out of the northwest at around 10 to 20 mph with locally stronger gusts. Easts of Highway 99 and in Kern County winds will generally be light to calm tonight. Winds Sunday through Monday will be out of the northwest at 8 to 12 mph afternoons and early evenings and light to near calm during the morning hours. Winds Monday night will be out of the southeast at around 8 to15 mph, increasing to15to25 mph Tuesday and Tuesday night. Wends Wednesday will be out of the northwest at 10 to 20 mph wth stronger gusts.
Rain: Models have pushed back somewhat the timing of the onset of rain from the upcoming storm. It now appears it will be Tuesday afternoon before precipitation spreads down the valley. Rain will continue at times Tuesday night through Wednesday with periods of showers Wednesday night into early Thursday. Dry weather will return later Thursday. For now, conditions for next weekend look dry, however a weak system will spread showers over northern California next weekend. Currently, models show the rain remaining to our north, but this has been anything but a normal year.
Frost: Coldest locations Sunday and Monday mornings will again tease with the lower thirties with river bottoms possibly hitting 30 degrees. Most locations will range between 32 and 37. This minor frost threat should be the last we’ll have for a while. A rather robust storm system will result in above freezing conditions Tuesday through Thursday. The air mass behind this system will lower temperatures into the mid to upper 30s, but it looks like temperatures will remain above freezing. Currently there’s nothing on models suggesting a pattern that would result in sub freezing temperatures even though temperatures will remain below average.
