April 4, 2023 report

April 4, 2023 am

After a cold, windy day yesterday, winds have died off. However, it is cold  for early April. Readings have dropped to marginally below freezing in many areas this morning. The pressure gradient, as we call it, has weakened considerably over what it was  24 hours ago. The current altimeter reading at San Francisco is 30.18 inches of mercury while at Las Vegas the current reading is 29.83. that’s still enough for somewhat breezy weather later today, however winds of no more than 24 mph are expected this afternoon. A northwest flow is currently over California behind yesterday’s trough passage. This will maintain a fairly chilly air mass. The freezing level taken over Oakland overnight stands at 4,200 feet. That will slowly rise in the coming days as upper level high pressure pushes in from the west. A trough of low pressure will push into the Pacific Northwest and northern California Thursday night and Friday, spreading showers down to roughly a Ukiah/Chico line. The main impact on our will be to slow the warming trend and to spread some high clouds over the area. Over the Easter weekend, a stronger ridge will build, setting up a milder westerly flow in the upper atmosphere.  The combination of building high pressure and that westerly flow aloft will drive temperatures well into the 70s this Easter weekend with readings eclipsing the 80 degree mark during the early to mid part of next week. longer range models show a possible change to wet weather the middle of the week but in the meantime fine spring weather will continue.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Thursday. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Thursday night through Friday night. Mostly clear Saturday through Tuesday.

Two Week Outlook:  April 11 through April 18: This model shows the return of an active pattern with a colder northwest flow, resulting in below average temperatures. The risk of showers will also be higher.

April:  This model is showing a dominant westerly flow during the month, resulting in below average temperatures. The main storm track will be through the Pacific Northwest and the northern one-fourth of California. Central California is just south of that zone with predicted near average precipitation.

April, May, June:  The 90 day outlook calls for generally near to below average precipitation as we head into the dry season. The model doesn’t swing in either direction regarding temperatures, calling for near average temperatures.

Wind Discussion: It will be somewhat breezy later today, but not to the extent of yesterday. Winds will be mainly out of the northwest this afternoon at no more than 10 mph, diminishing this evening. Winds later tonight through Friday will be mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 15 mph. during the night and morning hours, winds will generally be no more than 7 mph with periods of near calm conditions..

Rain Discussion:  Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost Discussion.  As of 5:30 this morning, the temperature had dropped to 30 at Lindcove, Lindsay, and Porterville. Other locations ranged from 31 to 36. The warming trend will slowly begin today, however not in time to prevent one more cold night with readings Wednesday similar to todays. Coldest river bottom and other low lying frost pockets could potentially drop to between 28 and 30. Like this morning, most locations will drop to 31 to 35. The inversion tonight will be stronger with temperatures tonight ranging from 4 to 7 degrees warmer.

Moderation will begin Thursday morning with readings generally between 34 and 39. Frost pockets will dip into the lower 30s for short durations. Friday morning and beyond will see above freezing temperatures prevail.
