Relatively strong upper level high pressure is centered over the four corners region this morning. The clockwise flow around the high has winds aloft out of the southwest. This is pumping a warm air mass into California. The marine layer is only roughly 500 feet deep at Monterey. The air aloft is quite warm with a freezing level of 13,900 feet over Vandenburg and 13,100 feet over Oakland. Temperatures will rise to the warmest levels we’ve seen all spring with widespread mid to upper 80s this afternoon. As s typical in April, wide swings in temperatures are common. Temperatures will drop a good10 to 12 degrees Tuesday as a trough of low pressure currently off the coast of the Pacific Northwest dives into northern and central California. That shallow marine layer will rapidly deepen and will surge inland tonight with gusty northwest winds moving down the valley. Gusts to near 40 mph are possible in western Fresno and Kings Counties with winds in the 10 to 20 mph range elsewhere. Temperatures will bottom out Friday, leveling off into the upper 60s to the lower 70s. High pressure off the southern California coast will build northeastward over the weekend for the next warming trend which will peak on Monday. another low will drop into Washington and Oregon Monday, deepening the marine layer once again and allowing it to surge inland for cooler weather again Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. any active weather from either system will remain over the northern one—fourth of California and points northward.
Forecast: Mostly clear and warm today. Increasing cloudiness late tonight. Partly cloudy at times Tuesday through Wednesday. Mostly clear Wednesday night through Monday.
