May 9, 2023 report

May 9, 2023 am

Summary: Low pressure in the upper atmosphere is located just off the central coast this morning. It’s all part of a weak, but complex, trough of low pressure extending from the Pacific Northwest to southern California. Variable mid and high level clouds spread over most of California overnight, but are generally at too high of an altitude to produce precipitation. the high sun angle of May will destabilize the atmosphere this afternoon and evening, setting off scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the mountain areas. The valley will remain dry, however, except for an isolated chance of showers near the foothills. The trough will move inland Wednesday as we begin the transition to more of an early summer like pattern. readings in the mid 70s today and Wednesday will move to the mid 80s Thursday. Strong high pressure over the eastern Pacific will build inland through the weekend, resulting in significant warming. At least mid 90s can be expected Saturday with readings in the mid to upper 90s Sunday through Tuesday. Models show an upper low developing over the Great Basin Saturday night through Monday. this will generate a southerly flow over California, possibly moving up some subtropical moisture from Mexico for a chance of scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada Sunday through Tuesday afternoon. No precipitation is expected on the valley floor. upper level high pressure will remain over and off the west coast for much of next week, resulting in well above average temperatures and dry conditions.

Forecast: Variable cloudiness through tonight. A slight chance of an isolated shower near the foothills. Clearing Wednesday. Mostly clear Wednesday night through Friday night. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Saturday through Tuesday with a warming trend.

Two Week Outlook:  May 16 through May 22: This model shows above average temperatures covering roughly the western third of the US and central California. There is also some indication that some kind of storm will affect the Desert Southwest and possibly central California.

May:  This model continues trends during the month of May that we saw in April. Pressures will be lower than average along the west coast, resulting in the chance of above average rainfall and below average temperatures

May, June, July:  This model doesn’t really move the needle either way for temperatures and rainfall over the next three months. being that we’re heading into the hot, dry season, it means little anyway.

Wind Discussion: Winds through Thursday night will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph. local gusts to near 20 mph are possible late this afternoon through the evening hours. Winds Friday will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 12 mph, becoming light and variable Friday night.

Rain Discussion: A very anemic looking upper low will move through central California today and tonight. Just about all locations will remain dry, although I wouldn’t completely eliminate the chance of showers over the Sierra Nevada and possibly the Kern County mountains with a slight chance of an isolated shower near the base of the foothills late this afternoon and tonight. Otherwise, expect dry weather through the weekend and for all of next week.
