May 23, 2023 report

May 23, 2023 am

Summary:  The beginning of a noticeable cooling trend will start today, especially in the central and northern portions of the valley. Infrared satellite imagery shows coastal low clouds penetrating through the Delta while winds at Travis AFB in the Delta are out of the southwest sustained at 20 mph, gusting to 26. We can see that modified marine air is moving inland. So far, it appears it’s not flowing over the Coast Range further south. Locations from Fresno County south will warm into the lower 90s while mid to upper 80s will be commonplace from Merced County north. The marine layer has deepened to nearly 3,000 feet. However, the difference in pressure between San Francisco and Las Vegas is still minor, so the full force of the marine influence will not be felt until Wednesday. In the big picture, low pressure is located over British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest and is developing a trough into northern California. This will increase the onshore flow, lowering temperatures to near average beginning Wednesday and continuing through the weekend. Weak upper level high pressure will try to build inland by Monday of  next week for a slow warming trend. However, no particularly hot weather is seen for the next ten days.

Forecast: Mostly clear skie through Friday night. Mostly clear skies will continue Saturday through Tuesday.

Two Week Outlook:  May 30 through June 5   This model simply shows a typical pattern for late May and early June, calling for average temperatures. Typical dry conditions will prevail with little to no chance of precipitation.

May:  This model continues trends during the month of May that we saw in April. Pressures will be lower than average along the west coast, resulting in the chance of above average rainfall and below average temperatures

May, June, July:  This model doesn’t really move the needle either way for temperatures and rainfall over the next three months. being that we’re heading into the hot, dry season, it means little anyway.

Wind Discussion: Winds later today will be out of the northwest at 5 to 12 mph. Local gusts to 25 mph will be possible by evening. Winds tonight and Wednesday will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph. Gusts to 25 mph are possible, mainly near the gaps and passes along the Coast Range. Winds Wednesday night through Friday will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph with locally stronger gusts.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry weather for the next week to 10 days.
