Summary:  A weak trough of low pressure extends from the Canadian Rockies south/southwest to southern California. For the second day in a row, coastal low clouds and fog have spread as far inland as the last range of mountains separating the Coast Range from the west side of the San Joaquin Valley. The low cloud deck has also spread from inland sections of southern California to the top of the Grapevine. Sandberg, near the top of the ridge route, was reporting dense fog as of 5:OOAM. With the depth of the marine layer at nearly 4,000 feet, the modified sea breeze will have no problem maintaining moderate temperatures in the valley. Readings today and Friday will range in the low to mid 80s with mid to upper 70s from Merced County north. The trough will begin to shift eastward Friday night and Saturday, allowing for a brief warming trend over the weekend. However, another weak upper low will drop southward into California from the Pacific Northwest and will eventually form a cut off low along the central coast Monday through Wednesday. This will tend to result in  moderate temperatures for the valley and daily chances for scattered thunderstorms up and down the Sierra Nevada.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Sunday night. Mostly clear skies will continue Monday through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook:  June 1 through June 7  This model simply shows a typical pattern for late May and early June, calling for average temperatures. Typical dry conditions will prevail with little to no chance of precipitation.

May:  This model continues trends during the month of May that we saw in April. Pressures will be lower than average along the west coast, resulting in the chance of above average rainfall and below average temperatures

May, June, July:  This model doesn’t really move the needle either way for temperatures and rainfall over the next three months. being that we’re heading into the hot, dry season, it means little anyway.

Wind Discussion: Winds will be mainly out of the northwest at around 8 to 15 mph during the afternoon through the late evening hours with locally stronger gusts through Sunday. Winds during the later night and morning hours will be generally out of the northwest at no more than 7 mph with periods of near calm conditions.
