May 31, 2023 report

May 31, 2023 am

Summary: Skies are overcast this morning from Fresno County south. The base of the overcast is between 6,800 and 7,000 feet. A weak upper low which yesterday was centered near Santa Barbara has shifted eastward into extreme western Arizona, creating a northwesterly flow both at the surface and aloft. The cloud deck will slowly mix out during the course of the day, revealing mostly clear skies this afternoon. Upper level high pressure over the eastern Pacific will slowly build inland as the week progresses. Temperatures will incrementally warm through the weekend. Readings will rise into the low to mid 80s today, the mid to upper 80s Thursday, and near 90 on Friday. Over the weekend and into early next week, the high will build overhead with early summer type temperatures returning. Many locations will return into the upper 90s. rapid snow melt from the massive snow melt in the Sierra Nevada is creating water vapor which will maintain the chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms along the crest of the Sierra Nevada. Some models show the formation of a cut off low off the southern California coast Monday, pointing to it moving northward Monday night and Tuesday. Other than the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada, this will be a dry system. However, cut off lows during the late spring and early summer seasons can be tricky, so we’ll keep a watchful eye on it.

Forecast: Mostly cloudy this morning from Fresno County south. Becoming mostly clear. mostly clear tonight through Sunday night. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Monday through Wednesday.

Two Week Outlook:  June 7 through June 13  This model is showing a broad trough of low pressure over and along the west coast during this timeframe. This time of year, typically it doesn’t mean much so the chance of precipitation is slim to none. However, temperatures will be somewhat below seasonal average.

May:  This model continues trends during the month of May that we saw in April. Pressures will be lower than average along the west coast, resulting in the chance of above average rainfall and below average temperatures

May, June, July:  This model doesn’t really move the needle either way for temperatures and rainfall over the next three months. being that we’re heading into the hot, dry season, it means little anyway.

Wind Discussion: Winds today will be mostly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph with local gusts to 20 mph. winds tonight through Saturday will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph during the afternoon through the evening hours and variable to no more than 8 mph during the night and early morning hours.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next week to 10  days.
