June 7,2023 report

June 7, 2023 am

Summary: An upper low has drifted into Inyo County early this morning. Doppler radar is indicating showers over Kern County at this hour which will move from the valley floor into the Kern County mountains shortly. The low has been a very slow mover and will center near the California/southern Nevada border by later this evening then into central Nevada Thursday while it continues to weaken. By Friday, this feature will have essentially dissipated only to be replaced  by a second trough of low pressure moving into the western US. This will renew the chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada during the second half of the weekend and into early next week. the main impact of this system will be to maintain below average temperatures and variable cloudiness from time to time over the valley floor. we’ll have to wait until Wednesday until high pressure over the eastern Pacific finally begins to build in from the west with marginally above average temperatures by late next week. At this point there’s nothing on the books to indicate any excessively hot weather ahead.

Forecast Party cloudy today and tonight with a chance of showers today, mainly this morning in Kern County. Mostly clear Thursday through Saturday. Partly cloudy Saturday night through Tuesday night. Mostly clear Wednesday.

Two Week Outlook:  June 14 through June 20  This model is showing a broad trough of low pressure over and along the west coast during this timeframe. This time of year, typically it doesn’t mean much so the chance of precipitation is slim to none. However, temperatures will be somewhat below seasonal average.

June:  Of course, this time of year, 30 and 90 day outlooks are virtually useless as they’re essentially the same every year. Basically light all day and hot and light all night and warm. Essentially for June, near average temperatures and dry..

June, July, August:  The 90 day summary outlook is the same this year as it is every year. Generally dry with somewhat above average temperatures. The monsoon season hasn’t begun yet, so we’ll start taking that more seriously down the road.

Wind Discussion: There will be periods through Saturday where winds will be out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph. local gusts to 20 mph will be possible, generally through tonight and mainly near showers.

Rain Discussion: Light showers and isolated thunderstorms moved through the valley during the predawn hours and have now moved into the Kern County mountains. The upper low responsible for the unsettled weather is slowly moving eastward through Inyo County. This placed the growing area on the far backside of the low so we’ll continue with a risk of showers today, mainly this morning. The low will lose its identity as it moves deeper into Nevada for a return to dry weather. Over the weekend, a second low will move into California for more scattered showers and thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada. Some models indicate there’s a chance of showers over the valley Sunday and Monday. I want to see more of a trend on models before I introduce a chance of showers for that time frame. After Tuesday, weak high pressure will build in from the west for dry weather.
