June 28, 2023

Summary: A weak trough of low pressure continues to linger along and over the west coast. However, it is the last vestiges ahead of what will become a classic valley heat wave. Most locations, both on the valley floor and in the mountain areas, are running 2 to 4 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago. There is, though, a trickle of marine air moving through the Delta which will provide slight moderation in temperatures, especially from Merced County north. A strong off shore high will begin to push inland Thursday and will eventually park right over California Friday through Sunday. This will drive temperatures to excessively hot values as hottest locations, especially Saturday and Sunday could top the 110 degree mark. Most locations will top out at about 106 to 109. Most models show the high beginning to weaken on the Fourth of July. A weak trough of low pressure will then displace the high around Wednesday or Thursday, lowering temperatures into the upper 90s to the lower 100s.

Forecast: Mostly clear and hot through Friday. Mostly clear and hot Saturday through Tuesday.  Mostly clear Wednesday.

Two Week Outlook:  July 5 through July 11: This model indicates a weak trough of low pressure will be along the west coast. Typically this pattern allows modified marine air to move down the valley. This should keep temperatures near to moderately below average with dry conditions continuing.

June:  Of course, this time of year, 30 and 90 day outlooks are virtually useless as they’re essentially the same every year. Basically, light all day and hot and dark all night and warm. Essentially for June, near average temperatures and dry.

June, July, August:  The 90 day summary outlook is the same this year as it is every year. Generally dry with somewhat above average temperatures. The monsoon season hasn’t begun yet, so we’ll start taking that more seriously down the road.

Wind Discussion:  Winds during the afternoon through the late evening hours will be out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph. locally stronger gusts are possible from the late morning through the late evening hours through Saturday.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for at least the next week.

Mid afternoon dew points: Low to mid 50s. Kern: Low to mid 50s.
