July 20, 2023

Summary Today will be the tenth day in a row that the temperature has exceeded 100 degrees. It will be at least Thursday of next week before temperatures slip below the century, if then. Strong upper level high pressure is centered over the Four Corners region this morning with California flanked on the far western side of the high. The clockwise flow around this system has the winds over California out of the southwest. That will slowly change to a southeasterly flow as the high slowly backs up towards the west as it centered over the Utah/Arizona border by Friday evening. With the high being in closer proximity, temperatures will again soar to excessive levels with hottest locations approaching the 110 degree mark Monday through Wednesday. As the flow becomes out of the southeast, it will become more favorable for transporting in monsoonal moisture. This will result in partly cloudy skies Friday through Monday with the possibility of isolated thunderstorms over the high Sierra each afternoon. The only areas to receive any relief from the heat will be the immediate coast. The marine layer is currently 1,300 feet. The freezing level is certainly at summertime depths as the latest balloon sounding over Oakland indicated a level of 13,700 feet, illustrating that bubble of warm, subsiding air over California.

Forecast: Clear and hot today. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Friday through Monday and extremely hot. Mostly clear and a bit less hot Tuesday through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook:  July 26 through August 1: This model shows a typical summer pattern with monsoonal moisture working its way into the desert southwest and possibly southern California. Expect near average temperatures and dry conditions but with a chance of isolated thunderstorms over the summit of the

Sierra Nevada.

July:  Typically, this time of year there is absolutely nothing going on in the world of weather. Temperature forecasts are the main forecast challenge. For now, the usual dry conditions will prevail with temperatures near to marginally above average

July, August, September: The monsoon into the Desert Southwest and occasionally California is what we carefully watch this time of year, especially during August and September. This model is currently showing below average precipitation over Arizona and New Mexico. This indicates there will be less of a chance of the monsoon visiting California this summer. Temperatures are expected to range above average.

Wind Discussion:  Winds during the late evening through the morning hours will generally be at or less than 8 mph with periods of near calm conditions. During the afternoon and evening, winds will be generally at or less than 15 mph with locally stronger gusts through Sunday.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for at least the next week.

Mid afternoon dew points: Low to mid 50s. Kern: Low to mid 50s.
