September 1, 2023 report

September 1, 2023

Summary  We will start off September significantly cooler as a trough of low pressure digs southward from the Pacific Northwest into northern and central California. Water vapor satellite imagery indicates the leading edge of the trough has reached as far south as Fresno County and will engulf the rest of central California today. Temperatures will generally be 10 degrees cooler today than yesterday and will cool another 6 to 8 degrees or so Saturday and Sunday. Coolest temperatures Sunday may not even reach the 80 degree mark. After a blazing summer this year, we will finally enjoy a touch of fall. Models show the trough morphing into a closed low over northern California and keep it there through Sunday evening. Monday will be a transition day as the low moves into the Great Basin. By Tuesday, a zone of weak high pressure will extend from the waters off the California coast to the central and southern Rockies. Readings will rise to near 90 Tuesday, leveling off into the low to mid 90s Tuesday and Wednesday. The winds aloft will be out of the west for much of next week, maintaining a dry weather regime.

Forecast Mostly clear skies through Tuesday. Mostly clear Tuesday night through Friday.

Two Week Outlook:  September 7 through September 13: This model indicates high pressure will be parked over the desert southwest with a weak trough of low pressure along the Pacific coast. This configuration will result in near average temperatures for the valley with dry conditions continuing.

August:  This model indicates temperatures over the next 30 days will be near to slightly above seasonal averages. Dry weather will continue, although we will have to keep a watchful eye to the south for possible tropical activity.

August, September, October: This model shows above average temperatures for much of the west, particularly the Desert Southwest. It also points to below average precipitation over the Desert Southwest, possibly meaning a less active monsoon season. The chance of precipitation for central California appears to be near average.

Wind Discussion:  Winds this morning will be generally light and variable then will be out of the west to northwest this afternoon at 10 to 20 with stronger gusts. Winds tonight through Sunday will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph with local gusts to 20 mph, mainly in the afternoons. Winds Monday will be generally variable to around 12 mph.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions.
