Summary: Temperatures at midday are running between 6 to 10 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago. A nice exchange of air masses has taken place behind a cold front that moved through late last night. Winds at most locations are out of the northwest at 10 to 15 mph with gusts over 20 mph, mainly along the west side. In the big picture, a trough of low pressure extends from the Dakotas southwestward to southern California while upper level high pressure lurks off shore. That high will build inland beginning late Wednesday and will dominate our weather through Thursday night. A very weak trough of low pressure will move through Friday and Friday night but will only manage to keep temperatures from climbing much above seasonal averages. A much stronger high will build in over the weekend, resulting in a significant warming trend. Readings will move from the mid 60s today and Wednesday to near 70 Saturday and the mid 70s Sunday and Monday. models for next week are still quite intriguing. The GFS model is showing a major winter storm off the northern California coast by Wednesday. It’s only expected to move slowly, possibly giving us an extended period of active weather. There are also hints of a tropical connection with this system, which could lead to the first major winter storm of the season.
Forecast: Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy from Fresno County north.. remaining mostly cloudy in Tulare and Kern Counties through Wednesday morning. Mostly clear Wednesday afternoon through Wednesday night. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Friday and Friday night. Mostly clear Saturday through Monday. increasing cloudiness late Monday and Monday night. Mostly cloudy Monday night and Tuesday.

Winds: Enough of a difference in pressure between northern and southern California exists to generate winds out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph. Local gusts to 25 mph are occurring along mainly the east side. Winds later tonight through Wednesday will continue out of the northwest at 5 to 15 mph. Winds Wednesday night through Friday will be variable to 7 mph with periods of near calm conditions.
Rain: Now that the rain has ended, dry weather can be expected through probably Tuesday of next week. models from Wednesday through Friday of next week still don’t show much activity as a major winter storm approaches the northern California coast. Also, some models are showing the possibility of a tropical connection which could morph this system into the first major winter storm of this young rainfall season. In fact, models going out to the second half of the month are indicating above average precipitation.
Frost: Even though a much cooler air mass has overspread the valley, above freezing conditions can be expected due to clouds and wind. Many locations will drop into the mid to upper 30s Thursday through Sunday mornings. Isolated low 30s are possible from Thursday through Sunday mornings in low lying regions. Beyond Monday, all locations will be above freezing due to cloud cover and potential rain.
