November 19, 2023 report

November 19, 2023

Summary:   The area of low pressure which resulted in mainly light rainfall amounts the past 48 hours has now shifted eastward into the Great Basin and Rocky Mountain region. Most locations have recorded less than .15, however there are some notable exceptions due to thunderstorm activity yesterday afternoon. Merced recorded .46 while over at Paso Robles a whopping 1.74 was tallied. The main weather challenge today will be timing of the dissipation of a low cloud deck which has formed over the valley portion of Kern County, and gusty winds due to pressure differences between the coast and the interior west. The current altimeter reading at San Francisco is 30.29 inches of mercury while Las Vegas was reporting 29.89. Already this morning, most locations on the valley floor are reporting wind speeds out of the northwest at 10 to 20 mph. Gusts to25 mph are possible, especially along the west side as pressure differences tighten up even more this afternoon. A series of chilly nights is on tap. By chilly, I mean seasonally so with readings in the mid to upper 30s at many locations each morning through next weekend. A weak short wave of low  pressure will move through Wednesday night and Thursday with no weather, however it will maintain seasonal temperatures with daytime readings in the mid to upper 60s later this week. no precipitation is anticipated this week as a dominant high pressure ridge will cover most of the western US.

Forecast:  Low overcast over Kern County and parts of Tulare County this morning, otherwise it will be mostly clear through Thursday with patchy night and morning fog and low clouds. Mostly clear Thursday night through Sunday with patchy night and morning fog and low clouds.

Wednesday                   Mostly clear 35/68Thursday Mostly clear 36/67Friday Mostly clear 35/69Saturday Mostly clear 37/65Sunday Mostly clear 37/66

Two Week Outlook:  November 26 through December 2  This model shows below average temperatures over most of the lower 48. One of the only exceptions will be central California which should experience near average readings. This model also indicates near average precipitation for the central valley.

November:  This model depicts above average temperatures for California eastward to the northern Great Basin. Precipitation projections show near average rainfall.

November, December, January:  This model projects above average temperatures over the western US. It’s rather surprising that this model is projecting near average precipitation. Typically, during strong El Nino years, which this is, above average precipitation prevails.

Wind Discussion:  Winds today will be out of the northwest, averaging 10 to 20 mph in most areas. Gusts to near 35 mph are possible, especially toward the center and west side of the valley. Winds will decrease after midnight tonight to around 5 to 10 mph. winds Monday through Wednesday will generally be at or less than 7 mph with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain Discussion.  No rain is likely for the next week to possibly 10 days.

Frost Discussion:  A  cooler air mass is now overspreading the valley on gusty, northwesterly winds. Dew points will hang up into the 40s today so radiational cooling will not be that  strong. However, this air mass is what I would call seasonal with widespread mid 30s to lower 40s expected. On any night beginning Tuesday morning a few isolated river bottom or low terrain may dip into the lower 30s, but no widespread frost is at hand. A little weak wave of low pressure will move through Wednesday night and Thursday. It’s possible dew points could lower just a tad, but safe conditions will continue for the remainder of the week. currently, medium range models don’t show any pattern that would result in sub freezing conditions

Mid afternoon dew points: Mid to upper 40s.  Kern: Low to mid 40s.
