Summary: A north/northeast flow continues to rotate around a low pressure system centered over northern Utah. The only active weather with this feature is light showers over the eastern Great Basin and the Rocky Mountains. Temperatures as of midday were anywhere from 7 to 10 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago. Dew points are down 5 to 10 from yesterday at this time. This cool dry air mass will continue to filter into the valley over the next 24 hours. Tonight will be the first night of subfreezing temperatures in most areas. More in the frost discussion below. By Sunday, a large ridge of upper level high pressure currently off shore will move inland, locking the current air mass in place through at least Wednesday of next week. the result will be subfreezing temperatures each morning. models show a weaking low pressure system approaching the coast next Thursday. However, on paper this feature looks quite weak. It’s possible no precipitation will be the result of this low system, either. Instead of an active pattern the first week of December, some models are now showing a blocking ridge of high pressure along the west coast. This definitely differs from previous model information which had been showing a good chance of precip around the 3rd. It now appears we will remain precipitation free, although the new 2 week model is indicating above average precipitation for all of California. For now, we’ll go with a dry forecast until we see more evidence of a real break in the pattern.
Forecast: Other than patchy morning fog, it will be mostly clear through Wednesday night of next week. variable cloudiness Thursday and Friday.

Rain: A weak low pressure system will approach the coast next Thursday. On paper, this system appears to be quite anemic. For now, we’ll keep rain out of the forecast for the next week and possibly longer.
Frost: Temperatures as of mid day are down 7 to 10 degrees from what they were 24 hours ago. Dew points are down anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees. Dew points as of 1:00pm were Bakersfield 32, Porterville 33, Visalia 35, Hanford 32, Fresno 36, and Madera 35. Temperatures and dew points are about where expected for this time frame. Mostly clear skies will aid in radiational cooling, which will allow temperatures to fall into the upper 20s/lower 30s at most locations. Coldest unprotected areas and other cold spots will drop as low as 26 to 28 degrees with most flatland locations ranging from 29 to 34. Hillsides will be generally above freezing. The inversion will be moderate tonight with temperatures at 34 feet 4 to 7 degrees warmer at most locations. Expect temperatures to be a degree or two colder Sunday morning. temperatures in the upper 20s to lower 30s can be expected each morning through Wednesday. We may see some increasing cloud cover by Thursday which would aid in moderating temperatures on the valley floor. there is still nothing on models suggesting a critically cold pattern for the foreseeable future.
