November 25, 2023 afternoon report

November 25, 2023

Summary:    Temperatures as of 12:45 are about where they were 24 hours ago and are generally in the upper 50s. dew points are in the low to mid 30s. so we will start out tonight very close to where we were last night. upper level high pressure covers most of the eastern Pacific Ocean and roughly the western ¼ of the US. The valley is now capped by the high so the cool, dry air mass is now trapped on the valley floor. widespread upper 20s and lower 30s will again be widespread tonight. We have a bit of a wildcard in frost forecasting Monday morning as a little benign low off the Oregon coast will slide southward parallel to the coast, spreading variable cloudiness over the valley Sunday afternoon and night. It may be enough to nudge temperatures up Monday morning. It’s also possible these clouds will be too sparse or thin. This little system will move inland over northern Baja by Monday night, setting the stage for another frost event with upper 20s and lower 30s. Models are still in conflict in trying to come up with a pattern for Wednesday and through the coming weekend. Another low will slide southward Tuesday and Wednesday then will move inland over northern Baja Wednesday night. it’s also possible for sprinkles or scattered light showers to occur Wednesday and Wednesday night. the high off shore after Wednesday night will pull off to the west, or retrograde, allowing a lot of energy to move into the Pacific Northwest and northern California it’s unclear how far south any showers will progress but we’ll keep a slight chance of showers in the forecast for Thursday through Saturday. Even if no precipitation occurs, we should see enough cloud cover to moderate the subfreezing temperatures during the second half of the week..

Forecast: Mostly clear tonight with patchy late night and morning fog. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Sunday. Partly cloudy Sunday night and Monday. mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Monday night through Tuesday night. variable cloudiness Wednesday through Saturday with a slight chance of showers.

Winds:  Winds through Tuesday will be generally at or less than 7 mph with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain: We’ll go ahead and forecast a chance of light showers for anytime from Wednesday to Saturday. A series of weak disturbances will move southward along the California coast. The wild card is how close to the coast each feature will be as it moves southward along the coastline. If precipitation does occur, it probably won’t be more than .10.

Frost:  The valley is now capped by the high so the cool, dry air mass is now trapped on the valley floor. widespread upper 20s and lower 30s will again be widespread tonight. Lows tonight in the coldest low spots will range around 26 to 27 in unprotected locations. Most locations with mostly flat terrain will range from 28 to 32. Hillsides will generally be above freezing. The inversion tonight will be decent with temperatures at 34 feet being 5 to 8 degrees warmer at most locations.
