November 26, 2023 report

November 26, 2023

Summary:   Some high clouds have been moving over the valley during the predawn hours. They slowed the radiational cooling process a tad. Even so, widespread upper 20s and lower 30s are dominant throughout the citrus belt. The overall pattern is upper level high pressure centered over the Pacific Northwest with a weak low west of the Oregon coast. That low is projected to move southward parallel to the coast then swing inland through central California Wednesday. This system is rather benign, but may have enough energy for sprinkles for scattered light showers. That low will swing into the Desert Southwest Thursday just as a second low drops out of Alaska and into the Pacific Northwest Friday. Most models indicate there will be a zonal flow from Friday of next week with Pacific storms running from west to east through the Pacific Northwest and roughly the northern 1/3 of California. High clouds will flow over the area today and tonight which may slow the radiational cooling process. Even so, most locations will drop into the low to mid 30s with upper 20s possible in the coldest low lying frost pockets. A relatively cool and dry air mass will remain trapped on the valley floor so any night this week with clear skies will drop  into the low to mid 30s with upper 20s in the coldest low lying frost pockets.

Forecast:  Variable mid and high level clouds through tonight. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Monday through Tuesday night. a slight chance of light showers Wednesday and Wednesday evening. Partly cloudy Thursday and Thursday night with a chance of sprinkles Thursday night. mostly clear to occasionally partly Friday through Sunday with patchy late night and early morning fog.

Two Week Outlook:  December 3 through December 9 This model is showing  the storm track migrating a bit further north. There’s a chance of above average rainfall for about the northern one-third of California with the southern two-thirds remaining below average. Temperatures will run marginally above average.

November:  This model depicts above average temperatures for California eastward to the northern Great Basin. Precipitation projections show near average rainfall.

November, December, January:  This model projects above average temperatures over the western US. It’s rather surprising that this model is projecting near average precipitation. Typically, during strong El Nino years, which this is, above average precipitation prevails.

Wind Discussion:  Winds through Wednesday will be generally at or less than 7 mph with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain Discussion.  There’s a slight chance of showers Wednesday and Wednesday evening with another slight chance Thursday and Thursday night. both of these events look very weak. No more than .10 of an inch will fall, if any at all. After Thursday night, the storm track will migrate north with dry weather Friday through next Tuesday. Even the two week model this morning is backing off on rain possibilities for central California.

Frost Discussion: There will be varying amounts of mid and high level clouds over the valley tonight. This may slow the radiational cooling process. How much will be determined by the amount of cloud cover. Even so, with dew points in the low to mid 30s, most locations will chill into the low to mid 30s with colder low spots in the upper 20s. coldest locations will generally range from 27 to 29 degrees tonight. Most flatland locations will range between 29 and 33. Hillsides will remain above freezing. Lows Tuesday morning will likely be a degree or two colder.   Temperatures Wednesday will likely be determined by the arrival time of cloud cover from a weak  low pressure system moving through. For now, we’ll go with mid to upper 30s  Temperatures for Thursday  and Friday mornings will be determined by the amount of cloud cover.  A slightly colder air mass will move into central California over the weekend for another round of low to mid 30s with possible  upper 20s in coldest   location.
