November 27, 2023
Summary: Temperatures as of 1:00 pm anywhere from 3 to 5 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago. Dew points, however, are down 2 to 5 degrees, meaning the air mass is a bit warmer but also a bit drier. With fairly radiational cooling under mostly clear skies, upper 20s and lower 30s will be widespread on the valley floor. in the big picture, upper level high pressure extends from its center near the Idaho/Oregon strong border southward into California. A relatively weak low pressure system is located roughly 500 miles northwest of the northern California coast. That low will slide southeastward and move inland through central and southern California Wednesday and Wednesday night. the main dynamics with this system will slide southeastward to our west. The best chance of light showers Wednesday will be from the Coast range westward to the beaches. There’s only a slight chance of showers over the valley floor and generally over the west side. The next system will move out of the Gulf of Alaska, through the Pacific Northwest and most of the energy sliding through Nevada just to our east. Again, a minimal chance of light showers is possible Thursday night with the best chance along the Sierra Nevada foothills. Beginning Friday and Saturday, a zonal pattern will begin. A series of moist Pacific storms will ride into the Pacific Northwest and roughly the northern one-third of California with periodic bouts of heavy rain to our north. Variable cloudiness with near average daytime temperatures can be expected while temperatures will be marginally below average during the night time hours. The wet weather will last through to Thursday. There’s still no strong indication of a pattern that would drive the storm track far enough to the south to benefit central California for at least the next 5 to 7 days.
Forecast: Other than occasional high clouds and patchy late night/early morning fog, it will be clear through Tuesday. Partly cloudy Tuesday night, especially after midnight. Variable cloudiness Wednesday with a chance of showers, mainly on the west side. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Thursday. A chance of light showers Thursday night and Friday. Variable cloudiness Friday night and at times through Monday with patchy late night and early morning fog.

Winds: Winds through Thursday will be generally at or less than 7 mph with periods of near calm conditions.
Rain: The chance for rain Wednesday appears to be quite minimal. What dynamics are left will pass to our west, mainly from the Coast Range westward. I’ll still keep a minimal chance of light showers in the forecast. Our second and also minimal opportunity will arrive Thursday night and early Friday. The risk factor will be mainly along the Sierra Nevada foothills with a lesser chance elsewhere. From Friday night to the middle of next week, a very active storm track will pound the Pacific Northwest and the northern part of California. It still appears we will be just south of active weather so we’ll keep the forecast dry from Friday afternoon through the middle of next week.
Frost: With mostly clear skies, strong radiational cooling and relatively dew points will chill lows into the coldest locations down to 27 to 28 degrees. Most flatland locations will bottom out between 29 and 32. Hillsides will continue to be above freezing. The inversion tonight will continue to be decent with temperatures at 34 feet at 5 to 8 degrees warmer at most locations. Lows Wednesday morning will be highly dependent on cloud cover ahead of the next weather system. For now, it appears readings will be a degree or two warmer than the previous morning. for Thursday and Friday, we’ll go with low to mid 30s at most locations, however, cloud cover may nudge temperatures up a bit. A marginally cooler air mass will overspread the valley Friday through Sunday. However, with an active storm track to our north, cloud cover may play a role.
