November 29, 2023 report

November 30, 2023

Summary:   A very weak low pressure system is skirting the central coast at this hour. Scattered sprinkles and very light showers are occurring along the coast range. It’s doubtful these showers will reach very far into the  San Joaquin Valley. What’s left of the low will move into southern California this evening. Our only real hope of measurable rain this week comes in the form of a fast moving trough of low pressure moving in from the Gulf of Alaska which will move down the valley Thursday night and Friday morning. if precipitation does occur, less than.10 will be possible over the weekend, upper level high pressure will build into California from its center well off shore. A moist river of air will move from west to east into the Pacific Northwest and roughly the northern ¼ of California. Beginning Monday, a ridge of high pressure will build northward along the Pacific coast, extending northward into western Canada. This will be an effective blockade from Pacific storms, meaning next week will be dry.

Forecast:  Partly cloudy today with a slight chance of light showers or sprinkles, mainly along  the west side. Partly cloudy tonight and Thursday with patchy late night fog. A chance of scattered light showers Thursday night into Friday morning. mostly clear but occasionally partly cloudy by the afternoon through Sunday with patchy late night fog. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Sunday through Wednesday with patchy late night fog.

Two Week Outlook:  December 5 through December11  Temperatures during this time frame will be somewhat above average. Northern California should receive above average rainfall, however central and southern California will see below average precipitation,

November:  This model depicts above average temperatures for California eastward to the northern Great Basin. Precipitation projections show near average rainfall.

November, December, January:  This model projects above average temperatures over the western US. It’s rather surprising that this model is projecting near average precipitation. Typically, during strong El Nino years, which this is, above average precipitation prevails.

Wind Discussion:  Winds will be at or less than 6 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Thursday. Winds will begin to increase out of the northwest Friday at 8 to 15 mph. Gusts to near 25 mph are possible, mainly along the west side. Winds will continue to be mainly out of the northwest Friday at 8 to 15 mph with stronger gusts.

Frost Discussion: Coldest river bottom and similar type locations will chill down to 29 to 32 degrees or so tonight. Most flat terrain locations will drop  down to 30 to 34. I’m hoping to have a slight bump up in dew  due to a weak weather system currently moving through. At any rate, it’s a safe night coming up. A weak trough of low pressure from the Gulf of Alaska will move through Thursday night and Friday morning. the air mass associated with this feature is somewhat colder and lower daytime highs into the upper 50s and lower 60s. Lows Saturday through Monday morning could lower into the upper 20s and lower 30s or very similar to readings we’ve seen this week. Once we get into the timeframe of Tuesday and beyond, a strong ridge of upper level high pressure will dominate our pattern for much of next week. Readings Monday through Thursday of next week will be in the low to mid 3-s. there is still no indication on models of a pattern that would result in  critically cold weather.
