November 30, 2023 afternoon report

November 30, 2023

Summary:   Most of Kern County and southeastern Tulare Couty are overcast due to upsloping. The base of the overcast over Meadows Field is 7,000 feet and it’s 6,500 feet over the Porterville airport. The remainder of the valley was partly cloudy. To our north, light showers have spread as far south as Ukiah which was just along and ahead of a cold front. That front and its associated trough of low pressure will move rapidly tonight. As it passes, there’s a minimal chance of sprinkles or scattered light showers, mainly during the late evening and overnight hours. As pressure rapidly falls over the Great Basin and southern California, gusty northwesterly winds will begin to pick up with possibly as high as 30 mph at times, mainly along the west side. That same northwesterly surge of air moving over California will form  upslope clouds against the north facing slopes of the Tehachapi and the west facing slopes of the Sierra Nevada in Kern and Tulare Counties. Over the weekend, a large high over the eastern Pacific will begin to build inland, beginning a prolonged period of dry weather with above average daytime temperatures. Readings well into the 60s will prevail until Tuesday and possibly near 70 Wednesday and Thursday. The usual nemesis of patchy fog and low clouds will be apparent in the night and morning  hours. Overnight lows will continue to be chilly, partly due to the dry soil conditions adding to relatively strong radiational cooling each night..

Forecast: Partly to mostly cloudy tonight with a slight chance of sprinkles or scattered light showers. Mostly cloudy in Kern and southeastern Tulare County until Friday, otherwise expect mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy skies. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy through Monday with occasional fog. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Monday through Thursday.

Winds: Winds will be fairly light through this evening, becoming out of the west/northwest tonight at 10 to 20 mph, except 5 to 15 mph in Tulare and Kern Counties. Winds Friday will be out of the northwest at 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 20 mph, mainly in Fresno and Kings Counties. Winds Friday night through Monday will be generally at or less than 6  mph with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain:  A fast moving cold front and an associated trough of low pressure will move down the valley  tonight. As it does, there’s a slight chance of sprinkles or scattered light showers. Rainfall, if any, will be less than .10. Dry weather will return Friday and will continue for at least a week. still nothing on medium range models to suggest a wet pattern on the horizon.

Frost: a combination of wind conditions, mixing, and cloud cover will keep temperatures mostly in the mid 30s to the lower 40s tonight. It’s possible those coldest regions may brush with the 32 degree mark. The cold front moving down the valley tonight will issue in a colder air mass, leading to lows on Saturday and Sunday mornings in the upper 20s to the lower 30s. I’m hoping dew points behind this system will keep temperatures above 27 degrees at most locations. Slow moderation in temperatures will begin Monday with low temperatures generally in the 30s Tuesday and Wednesday. There is still nothing on modelling information suggesting a pattern that would result in dangerous conditions.
