Summary: temperatures are anywhere from 7 to 13 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago. Surface observations are reporting winds out of the northwest from generally 8 to 15 mph with gusts to 25 along the west side. Upslope clouds continue to regenerate against the valley facing slopes of both the southern Sierra Nevada and the Kern County mountains. Upper level high pressure is located roughly 600 miles west of the California coast. The high will continue to build northward and eastward over the next 72 hours, which will cap the valley with a fairly seasonal air mass. After tonight, frost will become a way of life during the late night and early morning hours as a dry valley floor combines with the long nights of the winter season, creating ideal conditions for cooling to take place. By Tuesday, the off shore high will build even further to our north, blocking any hope of precipitation for the foreseeable future. The storm track will move up and over the high, extending California’s dry spell through at least mid December.

Winds Friday through Sunday will be generally at or less than 6 mph with periods of near calm conditions.

Conditions tonight will be somewhat chaotic with most locations chilling into the mid to upper 30s. coldest wind protected frost pockets could potentially drop to 30 to 32 degrees. Saturday morning will begin a string of frost nights. Coldest locations could potentially drop 26 to 28 degrees in the coldest low lying regions. Most flat terrain locations will drop to 29 to 32 with hillsides remaining marginally above freezing. Expect similar conditions Sunday through Tuesday mornings with perhaps a degree or two of moderation by Wednesday.
