Christmas Day report

With no active weather or sign of frost, we will be taking the afternoon off both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. We wish you a blessed Christmas holiday.

December 25, 2023

Summary: It is a very mild Christmas morning with generally partly to mostly cloudy skies. We still have a stubborn low overcast over much of the south valley with the base of the cloud deck around 3,500 feet. There are also areas of dense fog, especially in Fresno County up through Merced County. Both Madera and Merced were reporting a quarter mile visibility or less. upper level high pressure covers most of the western states and the eastern Pacific Ocean this morning. the high will dominate our weather through Tuesday night. cloudiness will begin to increase Wednesday ahead of a trough of low pressure which will move through Wednesday night. models continue to show this system losing its upper air support as it moves through the valley. The chance of measurable rain from Fresno County north is roughly 50/50 with just a chance of light showers as far south as Kern County. Our best chance of rain this week will occur Saturday. However, this system is also showing a great deal of weakening as it moves through central California. Longer range models for the first week in January continue to be inconclusive. For now, I would just call for a chance of precipitation during this period.

Forecast: Areas of dense fog, mainly north of a Selma/Kingsburg line. Otherwise, it will be mostly clear to partly cloudy this afternoon. Dense fog will become fairly widespread tonight and Tuesday morning. otherwise, it will be mostly clear with hazy afternoon sunshine. Partly cloudy Tuesday night with areas of fog developing. A chance of light showers, mainly from Fresno County north Wednesday night. partly cloudy with areas of morning fog Thursday.

Temperatures  Highs today and Tuesday will warm into the upper 50s to the lower 60s. lows tonight will range in the mid 30s to the lower 40s. highs Tuesday and Wednesday will warm into the low to mid 60s. lows Wednesday night will cool into the mid 30s to the lower 40s.

Frost Discussion: All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the remainder of the week. the dominant flow in the upper atmosphere will remain out of the west to northwest. This will cut off any potential polar air masses from moving into the south. Models going out through the first week in January indicate above average temperatures will continue.

Next report: December 26
