January 18, 2024

Summary: Widespread fog is again the main weather challenge this morning. as of 5:30 this morning, every location from Porterville on the south to Merced on the north was reporting visibilities between one-quarter and three-quarters of a mile. Bakersfield was the only exception with a visibility of five miles. Bakersfield reported a low cloud deck based at 600 feet. A temporary ridge of upper level high pressure will dominate our weather through Friday morning. clouds will begin to thicken and lower on Friday, leading to a chance of rain as far south as Fresno by sunset Friday. Low pressure will park in the Gulf of Alaska while a moist east to west flow sets up in the eastern Pacific. This will spread precipitation over central California Friday night. a series of impulses within this flow will result in periods of rain Saturday through Monday night. models continue to indicate the strongest of these will arrive Monday. This will be our best chance at significant precipitation for a while as models are suggesting a dry pattern during the last week in January.  In fact, this morning’s two week model, which encompasses the 25 through the 31 is indicating a dry pattern with warming temperatures.

Forecast: Areas of fog and low clouds this morning. otherwise, it will be mostly cloudy through tonight. Increasing clouds Thursday night and Friday morning with a chance of showers by sunset Friday. Showers likely Friday night, especially after morning. showers at times Saturday through Monday night, becoming partly cloudy Tuesday through Thursday with night and morning fog and low clouds.
