Summary: Abundant cloud cover is streaming over central California ahead of two off shore Pacific storms. The first system is the weaker of the two and will begin to spread precipitation over the valley possibly as early as sunset tonight from Fresno County north. The second system will arrive Sunday and precipitation will last through Monday night. periods of rain can be expected at times any time from tonight through Monday night. There is a third system out there which will arrive Tuesday night or Wednesday. This system however, is taking more of a northerly course and will only result in a chance of light showers Tuesday night and Wednesday from Fresno County north. The first two storms are from the lower latitudes. The balloon sounding above Oakland this morning indicating a freezing level of 10,800 feet. That will lower as the storm moves inland with snow down to 6,500 feet or so. Models beginning this coming Thursday indicate strong  upper level high pressure along the west coast for the beginning of a dry pattern for late January and early February.

Forecast: Cloudy today leading to a chance of rain at sunset from Fresno County north. Periods of rain from tonight through Monday night. partly cloudy Tuesday after periods of morning fog. A chance of showers Tuesday night and Wednesday, mainly from Fresno County north. Mostly to partly cloudy Wednesday night and Thursday. Partly cloudy Thursday night and Friday with areas of fog and low clouds.

Winds:  winds will be mainly out of the southeast at 5 to 12  mph through Monday. locally stronger gusts are possible Sunday and Monday.  

Rain: We should get the bulk of the day in with no precipitation. the chance of rain will begin to increase around sunset tonight. Expect periods of rain from tonight all the way into Monday night. The second storm, which is the strongest of the two, should result in fairly substantial amounts of rain. Computer generated rainfall estimates on the east side from Fresno County north show an inch and a quarter to an inch and three quarters are possible. In Tulare County, between an inch and a quarter and an inch and three quarters is possible. The valley portion of Kern County could potentially tally up between one half and one inch. That same amount can also be expected on the east side of Fresno County down to Kings County. Dry weather will return Tuesday then a third, much weaker, will move through Tuesday night and Wednesday for a chance of light showers from Fresno County north. Dry weather returns Thursday and will hold through at least next weekend.

Frost: Expect above freezing temperatures for at least the  next 7 days.
