January 23, 2024 report

January 23, 2024

Summary: low clouds stretch the entire length of the Sacramento/San Joaquin Valleys. The back side of the trough is clearing the Sierra Nevada. Even so, a few lingering showers are occurring over foothills of Tulare County. The low clouds and fog will be slow to burn off this morning. some sunshine is possible this afternoon, mainly north of Tulare County. The next weather system will arrive Wednesday. The dynamics of this system appear a little better, so it appears light showers will spread all the way down the valley, especially Wednesday afternoon and evening. Upper level high pressure will begin to push in from the west on Thursday. This high will be the dominant feature in our weather through the weekend and for the first couple of days of next week. Models continue to point to wet weather for the first week of February. It’s rare to see the two week model forecast a 90% chance of rainfall, but that’s the way it’s been leaning the past two days.

Forecast: low overcast today with some clearing possible this afternoon. Patchy fog is also in the forecast for this morning. mostly cloudy tonight with areas of clearing after midnight. Periods of rain Wednesday through Wednesday evening. Partly cloudy Thursday through Tuesday with areas of night and morning fog and low clouds.

Rain: The next chance of rain will arrive Wednesday morning. The southern portion of this storm looks more organized this morning on satellite imagery, so I feel comfortable adding rain to the forecast to the entire valley Wednesday through Wednesday evening. Most, if not all, of the rain should be over by midnight Wednesday night. rainfall amounts will be generally light with this system, possibly as much as a third of an inch up in Merced County, sloping to less than a tenth in kern County. Amounts in Tulare, Fresno, and Kings Counties will generally range between a tenth and a quarter of an inch.
