January 24, 2024 report

January 24, 2024

Summary: Light showers have already spread over the Coast Range and into the valley from the latest Pacific storm which is located just off shore. The trough of low pressure will cross northern and central California today with periods of generally light showers into the evening hours. Rainfall amounts from the current storm will be generally light with less than a quarter of an inch in most locations. It’s possible parts of Kern County will remain dry. With abundant surface moisture and partial clearing tonight, fog will form, possibly on a widespread basis. Dew points have been running in the low to mid 50s, meaning dewpoints and temperatures will come together nicely tonight to form that fog. Upper level high pressures will begin to push in from the west Thursday to start building a warm air inversion above the valley floor and creating the ideal conditions for fog formation each day for at least the remainder of the week. Dry weather will prevail from Thursday through next Wednesday under a blanket of high pressure. Models still point to Thursday, February 2 as a transition day from dry weather into some possible storminess.

Forecast: Periods of light showers today. A chance of light showers for a time this evening, otherwise mostly cloudy tonight. Widespread dense fog developing late. Partly cloudy Thursday through Wednesday of next week with extensive fog and low clouds.
