January 25, 2024 afternoon report

January 25, 2024

Summary: The bulk of the cloud cover from this morning low clouds and fog has lifted and moved into the south valley. Where skies clear this evening, and with dew points up into the low to mid 50s, dense fog and low clouds will form rather rapidly, becoming widespread by sunrise. A ridge of upper level high pressure continues to push in from the west and will seal plenty of moisture on the valley floor for widespread night and morning fog. Clearing can be expected each day through Tuesday. We’ll transition Tuesday from the current high pressure regime to one where a deep low centered in the Gulf of Alaska with a pipeline of moisture running from west to east into California. By next Thursday or Friday, a ridge of high pressure will build over the central Pacific with a trough of low pressure extending from the Gulf of Alaska southward to California. This means very unsettled weather will be with us until later next week. if this pattern pans out the way it appears it will, active weather will continue with temperatures plunging to below average for a change.

Forecast: Dense fog and/or low clouds developing tonight, becoming widespread by morning. fog and/or low clouds nights and mornings, clearing in most areas in the afternoons through Tuesday. Increasing cloudiness Tuesday night. a chance of rain Wednesday, becoming likely Wednesday night and Thursday.

Winds:  Winds will be generally at or less than 6 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Sunday

Rain: Dry weather will continue through Tuesday of next week. If models are correct, beginning late Tuesday night and Wednesday, a prolonged period of wet weather will set up. During the early to mid part of next week. an atmospheric river of air may develop, aimed at central and southern California. After that, we may sese some cold storms develop Thursday and Friday for lowered snow levels. All in all, if all goes as planned, substantial amounts of precipitation will fall from February 2 through the 8.

Frost: Frost is by no means in the forecast. However, models for late next week and the following weekend are indicating both active and much colder air will move into California. While subfreezing temperatures are not in the forecast at this time, we’ll have to see how  the pattern shakes out at roughly the sixth and seventh of next month.
