February 24, 2024 report

February 24, 2024

Summary  Upper level high pressure will ensure a beautiful weekend with a slow warming trend as readings move into the lower 70s. The high level clouds that are mainly in the south valley this morning will shift eastward as the day weas on, revealing mostly clear skies for the remainder of the weekend. On Monday, a trough of low pressure will move into the Pacific Northwest. This will act as a kicker in moving a stationary low off the coast inland. As it does, showers will spread over central California, especially Monday afternoon and Monday night. This will not be a big precipitation producer, however a tenth to a quarter of an inch seems possible. The low will move into the Great Basin by Tuesday, temporarily ending the threat of precipitation. upper level high pressure will take control Tuesday through Thursday of next week. models continue to trend towards a trough of low pressure moving out of the Gulf of Alaska, spreading precipitation over California. It appears that more than one impulse will move through the valley from the 2nd to the 6th for a prolonged period of rather cold and unsettled weather.

Forecast: Mostly to partly cloudy this morning with patchy fog. Mostly clear this afternoon through Sunday. Increasing cloudiness Sunday night. A chance of showers Monday afternoon and Monday night. Partly cloudy with patchy fog Tuesday. Becoming mostly clear Tuesday night through Thursday. Increasing cloudiness Thursday night leading to a chance of rain Friday through Saturday.

Two Week Forecast:  March 3 through March 8: This model shows the potential for storms to move out  of the Gulf of Alaska and into the Pacific Northwest and California. It does not depict above or below average rainfall but does suggest below average temperatures for a change.

Thirty Day Report: This model depicts temperatures near to marginally above average during this time frame. A good chance of above average precipitation will continue through the month as the El Nino pattern continues.

Ninety Day Report: This model favors the storm track being much further south than in most years, resulting in above average precipitation. temperatures on this model are also negligibly above average.

Winds:  Winds will be generally at or less than 10 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Tuesday.

Rain: Dry weather will continue until Sunday night. There is a slight chance of showers Monday morning with an increasing chance Monday afternoon and Monday night. Dry weather will return Tuesday through at least Thursday of next week. it appears a fairly major trough of low pressure will move out of the Gulf of Alaska and into California around the first or second of March, possibly beginning a period of unsettled weather. For now, it appears the first big trough will move in around March 2 with more disturbances through the 6th and possibly the 7th. This system’s origins are in the Gulf of Alaska so snow levels will be fairly low. This far out, it’s impossible to estimate the amount of precipitation that’s possible, but it looks like the mountains will do pretty well.
