March 8, 2024 report

March 8, 2024

Summary  A ridge of upper level high pressure covers most of the eastern Pacific Ocean with a ridge extending northward into the Pacific Northwest and the Canadian Rockies. The high will shift eastward Saturday, allowing a trough of low pressure to move into the Pacific Northwest and central California Sunday night and Monday. light showers will spread into northern California Sunday night, spreading showers as far south as a Monterey/Merced line. There is a slim chance of light showers moving all the way into the south valley Sunday night and Monday. a second trough will move through Tuesday, but again, the best dynamics will be to our north with measurable rain no further south than a Monterey/Merced/Yosemite line. Beginning Wednesday, a ridge of high pressure will build along the Pacific coast while a low center develops over Arizona. This will create a northeast flow over northern and central California. This will have the tendency to result in near average temperatures along with dry conditions. This general pattern will continue through next weekend. Longer range models also look dry. So, after two months of active weather in California, it appears a global shift will occur with dry weather returning to the Pacific coast along with generally above average temperatures.

Forecast Mostly clear skies through Sunday. Increasing cloudiness late Sunday leading to a slight chance of light showers with a slight chance of light showers Sunday night and Monday morning. partly cloudy Monday with a slight chance of showers Monday night and Tuesday. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Tuesday through Friday.

Two Week Forecast:  March 14 through March 20: This model depicts a strong high center over the western one-third of the US and off shore. This, in turn, will drive the storm track well north of California for dry weather with above average temperatures.

Thirty Day Report: If this model has much credence, rainfall will remain above average, especially in northern and central California, stretching into the interior west. Temperatures however, look to be marginally below average.

Ninety Day Report: This model indicates near to marginally above average rainfall over the next three months. Equal chances are given for temperatures being above or below average.

Winds:  Winds will be generally out of the northwest through this evening at 5 to 8 mph. Winds tonight through Monday night will be generally less than 8 mph with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain: there will be two chances for measurable rain coming up. The first will be Sunday night and early Monday. The second will be Monday night into Tuesday morning. Each of these events will be very weak this far south will generally less than .10. The only chance for higher amounts appears to be from Merced northward. Beginning Wednesday, we’ll see the beginning of a period of dry weather which will last through next weekend. The two week model is suggesting dry weather through at least the 21 as finally a global pattern shift takes place.
