March 11, 2024 report

March 11, 2024

Summary  Two weak waves of low pressure will move through northern and central California: one today and one tomorrow. Tuesday’s trough passage will spread light showers over northern California, possibly down to a Monterey/Merced line. It’s possible a few sprinkles could reach as far south as Fresno County, however, anything measurable is doubtful. On Wednesday, a large high will develop along the shore of North America, ridging north into British Columbia. While that’s occurring, a low center will drop from the northern Rockies into the Desert Southwest. Any precipitation from this system will remain over Utah and northern Arizona. The flow between these two systems will bring the flow aloft out of the northeast which will maintain near average temperatures through Friday. The southwestern low will weaken and shift eastward by Friday, allowing the off shore high to move inland. This will begin to push temperatures into the 70s over the weekend. It’s possible that by the early to mid part of next week, readings may move into the mid to upper 70s.

Forecast mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy today and tonight. Variable cloudiness late tonight and Tuesday with a slight chance of showers from Merced County north. Becoming mostly clear Wednesday. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Wednesday night on through Monday of next week.

Two Week Forecast:  March 18 through March 24: This model shows a chance of a weather system moving through the southern half of California with dry weather in northern California. With that in mind, there’s a minimal chance of showers, especially in the south valley with above average temperatures.

Thirty Day Report: If this model has much credence, rainfall will remain above average, especially in northern and central California, stretching into the interior west. Temperatures however, look to be marginally below average.

Ninety Day Report: This model indicates near to marginally above average rainfall over the next three months. Equal chances are given for temperatures being above or below average.

Winds:  Winds today through Tuesday will be at or less than 8 mph with periods of near calm conditions. Winds Wednesday through Thursday night will be out of the north/northwest at 10 to 20 mph. local gusts to  30 mph will be possible, mainly west of highway 99. Light winds will return Friday.

Rain: The second of two waves of low pressure will move quickly through late tonight and Tuesday morning. models show this system’s dynamics completely washing out. Only a minimal chance of sprinkles or light showers will be possible from Merced County north. The remainder of the growing area will remain dry. Otherwise, this week will be rain free. Dry conditions also show up on medium range models. So, after late tonight and early Tuesday, expect dry weather.
