March 16, 2024 report

March 16, 2024

Summary The technical term for it is a rex block pattern. that is when upper level high pressure parks over the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia while a cut off low develops over the Desert Southwest. The counterclockwise circulation around the low is generating a northeast flow over central California. High and mid level clouds from the low will track northeast to southwest over the valley from time to time. A few light showers are possible over the southern Sierra Nevada. However, there’s no chance of precipitation over the valley floor. models keep the low over the Desert Southwest for the next four or five days. However, it will weaken as the days go by, allowing high pressure to completely take over. As the high builds, temperatures will warm accordingly. Warmer locations will tease with the 80 degree mark as early as Monday then will level off to the 80 degree mark Tuesday and Wednesday. A complex pattern will begin to take shape as early as Friday. Models vary, but it appears a trough of low pressure will develop over and along the west coast. The first phase of the change will result in a cooling trend beginning Friday and possibly a chance of showers Saturday through Monday. Currently this does not appear to be a big precipitation producer but rather a chance of showers, mainly over the mountains. The two week model shows an unsettled pattern between the twenty third and the twenty ninth with a higher than average risk of precipitation and below average temperatures.

Forecast Other than occasional mid and high level clouds, it will be mostly clear through Thursday night. partly cloudy Friday with a slight chance of showers Saturday.

Two Week Forecast:  March 23 through March 29: This model indicates a fairly significant trough of low pressure along the west coast. Disturbances will move out of the trough and into California from time to time, resulting in occasional risk of showers and below average temperatures.

Thirty Day Report: If this model has much credence, rainfall will remain above average, especially in northern and central California, stretching into the interior west. Temperatures however, look to be marginally below average.

Ninety Day Report: This model indicates near to marginally above average rainfall over the next three months. Equal chances are given for temperatures being above or below average.

Winds:  Winds will be generally favorable to around 8 mph through Tuesday with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain: It appears our next chance of measurable rain will be about a week from now. Models vary, but they do show a trough of low pressure over and along the west coast for  several days, resulting in a chance of showers from time to time week after next.
