April 18, 2024 report

April 18, 2024

Summary  A zone of upper level high pressure covers most of the eastern Pacific Ocean and California. This will allow temperatures to warm into the mid  80s through Saturday. The marine layer along the coast stands at 1,100 feet which is roughly 600 feet deeper than 24 hours ago but is not deep  enough to spill through the Delta. A weak disturbance off the southern California coast will move inland tonight and Friday, spreading mainly high clouds over the region, otherwise there will be no impact from this system. Much cooler weather will begin Sunday as a trough of low pressure extends from the Gulf of Alaska all the way southward to southern California. The dynamics of this system this far south will be too weak for precipitation to occur other than a few showers over the Sierra Nevada. Our next chance of precipitation on the valley floor will occur Friday and Saturday of next week as a more significant trough of low pressure moves into California.

Forecast Other than periods of high clouds, it will be mostly clear today. Variable  high clouds tonight and Friday morning. mostly clear Friday afternoon and on through Thursday of next week.

Two Week Forecast:  April 24 through April: This model is flipping back to one which could result in showers for the valley. An area of low pressure is projected to be off the California coast between the 24 and 26 for at least a chance of showers and below average temperatures.

Thirty Day Report: This model gives equal chances of above and below average temperatures for the month of April. The chance of precipitation is slightly above average for the month.

Ninety Day Report: As we enter the dry season, this model predicts precipitation will be above or below average. There is no real trend to grab onto, so temperatures are expected to be near seasonal average.

Winds: Winds through Sunday will be mainly variable with periods of near calm conditions. Winds during the afternoon and early evening will be mainly out of the northwest 5 to 10 mph.

Rain: The next chance for precipitation appears to be Friday and Saturday of next week. a fairly significant area of low pressure will move to a position off the northern California coast Friday then moves inland through northern and central California Saturday. It’s still much too early to forecast rainfall amounts or timing, however  this is the third day in a row models have been trending in this direction.
