April 19, 2024

Summary  Overall, a weak blanket of high pressure covers the eastern Pacific Ocean and the western US. The lone exception is a very weak trough of low pressure which will move through central California this afternoon and tonight. The marine layer has deepened considerably in response to this feature. In fact, the latest reading out of Monterey indicates a depth of 2,200 feet. Some cooling will be possible this afternoon, mainly from Merced County north as the onshore flow appears too weak to tug the sea breeze all the way down the valley. Beginning Saturday, a stronger ridge will build northward  along the west coast, peaking on Tuesday when warmest locations may hit the  90 degree mark. Wednesday will be a transition day as a fairly weak trough of low pressure moves southward. One weak wave will move through Wednesday followed by a stronger trough Thursday afternoon and Friday. Even though the dynamics with this system appear fairly weak, I need to add a chance of showers to the forecast for late Thursday through Friday night.

Forecast A mix of high clouds and sunshine this morning. mostly clear this afternoon and on through Wednesday of next week. partly cloudy Wednesday night. increasing cloudiness Thursday leading to a chance of showers late Thursday through Friday night.

Two Week Forecast:  April 26 through May 2: This model is flipping back to one which could result in showers for the valley. An area of low pressure is projected to be off the California coast between the 24 and 26 for at least a chance of showers and below average temperatures.

Thirty Day Report: This model gives equal chances of above and below average temperatures for the month of April. The chance of precipitation is slightly above average for the month.

Ninety Day Report: As we enter the dry season, this model predicts precipitation will be above or below average. There is no real trend to grab onto, so temperatures are expected to be near seasonal average.

Winds: Winds through Monday will be mainly variable with periods of near calm conditions. Winds during the afternoon and early evening will be mainly out of the northwest 5 to 10 mph.

Rain: Dry weather will continue until at least Wednesday night of next week. by late Thursday through Friday of next week, a trough of low pressure from off shore Pacific Northwest then into California. On paper, this system appears rather anemic. Even so, I feel it necessary to add a chance of showers from late Thursday through Friday night. currently, I’d put the chance of measurable rain at 30% for Wednesday night through Thursday.
