April 20, 2024 report

April 20, 2024

Summary  A ridge of upper level high pressure stretches from the Pacific Northwest to southern California while a very weak trough of low pressure is moving through the Desert Southwest. The high will maintain its strength through Sunday then will begin to amplify Monday and Tuesday, leading to our first 90 degree readings of the spring season. There’s roughly a 60% chance of warmer locations reaching 90 degrees or higher. As is usually the case during the spring season, one extreme will flip flop with cooler temperatures returning beginning Wednesday. By Thursday, a trough of low pressure will be approaching the northern California coast.  Light showers will spread over northern California, spreading into at least northern sections of central California Friday. We’ll keep a chance of light showers in the forecast for mainly Friday and Friday night. A second cweather system will follow next weekend, keeping showers going over the mountain areas. Foor now, we’ll maintain a dry forecast for next Saturday and beyond, however my confidence in that is not that great so stay tuned.

Forecast Other than occasional high clouds, it will be mostly clear through Thursday. Increasing cloudiness Thursday night. variable cloudiness Friday through Saturday with a slight chance of showers. f

Two Week Forecast:  April 27 through May 3: A rather cool northwest flow aloft is evident during this time frame, resulting in generally below average temperatures during this period. Expect very little chance of precipitation.

Thirty Day Report: This model gives equal chances of above and below average temperatures for the month of April. The chance of precipitation is slightly above average for the month.

Ninety Day Report: As we enter the dry season, this model predicts precipitation will be above or below average. There is no real trend to grab onto, so temperatures are expected to be near seasonal average.

Winds: Winds through Tuesday will be mainly variable with periods of near calm conditions. Winds during the afternoon and early evening will be mainly out of the northwest 5 to 10 mph.

Rain: Two low pressure systems will move through central California, one late Thursday night and Friday and the second Saturday and Sunday of next week. There will be a chance of light showers, mainly Friday and Friday night. Preliminary data indicates this will be a light precipitation event at best. Isolated spring thunderstorms will be possible. For now, we’ll keep that in the slight chance category. Currently, it appears next Saturday and Sunday will be dry with dry weather the following week.
